Does Modesty Promote Rape Culture?

... Some in our culture project the idea that “covering up” promotes rape culture. This term refers to a society where sexual objectification and victim blaming pave the way to an increase in the occurrence of rape. Media outlets indicate that by teaching men to see women’s bodies as sexual objects, religious modesty feeds rape culture and intensifies the desire to sexually assault. This pressure on women to “protect men” from viewing their bodies as objects, according to secular media, insinuates women are responsible for their own rape! But there is an important fact missing in this argument: it assumes all religions pursue modesty for the same reasons. It assumes all religions are the same. ...

All religions are not the same. Christianity is special because Christ has called us to be His sons and daughters. All other religions try to reach out to God, but do not find Him. However, Christ God came down from Heaven and sought and established us to be His Bride, the Holy Orthodox Christian Church. And through the ministry of His Holy Church, our bodies become Temples of the Holy Spirit by our reception of Baptism, Holy Chrismation, and Holy Communion. Thus, as Christians, we are all called to guard all our senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, and feeling because we have died to ourselves, and now live for our Lord God and Savior, Christ Jesus.

Because we are Temples of the Holy Spirit, we Christian women should dress modestly and cover our heads so as not to offend our guardian angels. Men too should dress modestly and not bare their chests or bodies in public. As most of us will marry and have families, our purpose in life is to be holy and to raise children as future saints in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not marry and who are called to live the monastic life serve God and His Kingdom by offering unceasing prayers to God for us all that we will be saved.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Very nice response Maria. I'm curious, do Orthodox Christian women wear head coverings all the time?

Most True Orthodox women cover their head while in church, but then remove it as soon as they leave the church, but some will wear a head covering or scarf all the time even while sleeping.
