Saint Mark of Ephesus

Post by Daniel »

Many were tempted by the idea that one can find a medium between two doctrines. True: one can find such expressions which, having a double meaning, could at the same time express something between the two doctrines on the same subject is impossible; for in this case it must be something between truth and falsehood, between an affirmation and a negation... What middle doctrine can there be here? ...Avoid, brethren, such teachers, and all communion with them. They are false apostles, workers of evil transformed in to Apostles of Christ...It is not the Lord Jesus they serve, but their own bellies, and seduce the hearts of the innocent by their sweet words and blessings.

"It is not the Lord Jesus they serve, but their own bellies"

This is striking. How is it that such people, that is ecumenists, serve their own bellies?

It would seem clear enough that those who strive for such compromises either do not understand why Christ came into the world, or they don’t care. They think that He came to preach an artificial ethical message like their own, that He came to teach us how to live upon this earth as good citizens, caring for the environment, or making the world smile. They say over and over again that people must follow the law of Christ in order that “they may be One”. None of them realize how much their expectations resemble the expectations of the Jews who wanted the Messiah to be an earthly King.

They do not want Christ as He is, just like they do not want the Church as it is; they do not want the Christ Who refused to submit to the devil’s temptations in the desert. They want a Christ Who will submit to them. They want a Christ Who desires the Kingdoms of the earth, a Christ Who will turn the stones into bread so that men’s “bellies” can be filled, a Christ who will overwhelm the world with miracles that force men to submit. A Christ who wishes to build a well-behaved society, a better Earth.

In other words, these people do not wait for Christ, but for the Antichrist. Until the Second Coming, Christ will remain humble and hidden, far from earthly powers and earthy comforts, without forcing anyone to follow Him, and only asking of those who would come near Him to resemble Him in humility and obscurity, and to expect nothing earthly.

The ecumenists who speak of other Christian “Churches”, other “Lungs”, heretic baptisms, lost branches, do not want that kind of Christ. Knowingly or unknowingly, they are ready to cast Christ into the fire because He upsets their plans which they have been persistently cultivating for years.

Ecumenists, and as much as them the people who follow them, want a Christ Who will talk about this life and not the other, a Christ Who will offer the pleasures of this life and not of the next. They do not want wealth that cannot be weighed and touched, but wealth that is tangible here and now. They do not want Him as ruler of the future age, but of the present one.

Even the so-called “fight from within” advocates are so overwhelmed by this conglomerate of men because of their earthly might and visible unity which they could not bear to separate from in the name of Christ; because they to think Christ demands kingdoms over truth.

This is why they do not care what will become of the truth when the wavering and so-called Christian churches unite after a thousand and one compromises. They are not interested in what will become of the life in Christ after a union with so many religious barbarians and spiritual nitwits, new-calendarists included. The truth does not interest them; Christ does not interest them, nor the life in the Spirit and grace. They are interested only in the earthly power that unity gives – it feeds their bellies.
