OrthodoxWord stopping publication-6 more issues only

Post by Barbara »

Perhaps in a year or so, this venerable magazine will cease publication entirely :

"IMPORTANT NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS

With more than a little regret, we have decided to discontinue The Orthodox Word at the end of the next volume (no. 59). Our last issue will be no. 353, that is, six issues from the present one.

The primary reason for this decision is the fact that, while the number of Orthodox Word subscribers has stayed about the same for many years, the amount of our book sales has increased tremendously. We find it difficult to meet the growing demand for new titles and new editions of old titles while at the same time publishing The Orthodox Word, which has become cumbersome to mail out due to new postal regulations. Thus, we have decided to concentrate our time and energy on book publishing, which now includes ebooks and audio books as well as print editions.

Among our plans is the publication, in book form, of compilations of past articles from The Orthodox Word, so that this material will be available to a wider readership and have greater permanency.

In discontinuing The Orthodox Word a year from now, we will strive to make this as convenient as possible for you, our subscribers. To see when your subscription runs out, look for the number of your last paid issue on the right side of the mailing label of issues you receive. When your subscription is about to run out, you will receive a notification from us offering you to renew your membership through the remaining issues.

Those whose subscriptions end beyond no. 353 will receive a check in the mail in the amount of the overpayment.

Those of you who have relied on The Orthodox Word to be informed of the publication of new titles and editions may in the future stay abreast of such announcements by signing up to our email mailing list here: https://sainthermanmonastery.com/v/vspf ... pform.html.

Those who instead wish to receive announcements by mail may write to us with that request, and we will send you flyers or postcards.

We wish to thank all of you, our subscribers, for your support, encouragement and feedback over the years. While we are saddened to cease publishing our magazine, which was blessed by St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco in 1965 and was overseen by Hieromonk Seraphim Rose of blessed memory for its first 101 issues, we look forward to being able to publish more books, and thus reach a wider audience with the Orthodox word of God."

Interesting, thank you for sharing.

Still not expecting them to republish Russia's Catacomb Saints. If they do it will be heavily edited to support their position.

I can't recall who did, but someone sent an email asking about it and that they had admitted to planning on republishing RCS but they made note of needing to correct errors.

To be fair, there were errors, as I recall something having to do with a priest or bishop was believed to have reposed but turned out he was alive years later. I imagine they might use that as a backdoor to edit far more than necessary.

I am sure they are not the 'errors' they are referring to.

I'm 99.999% sure that's the plan. But I'm curious if they would wait on it now since it seems to me that it could've gained some popularity especially since you can order a copy from Lulu. It'll be a sloppy propaganda job knowing there's access to the original copies floating around. Who knows, not the first time people say, "meh, good enough" and hope no one investigates.
