After hearing about the geomagnetic storm, I though I would take the odds in trying to photograph the aurora here in NM. After taking one photo, I was extremely excited to see that I had in fact captured a red/purple aurora on the northern horizon. I was very surprised to see the aurora appear this far south.

They really lit up the sky for a few minutes in central Virginia!

Now some of the most spectacular auroras recently photographed:

Tonight, June 22nd/23, brought the kind of aurora show weve been waiting for. Thankfully, I live about three blocks away from Lake Superior in Marquette, MI and was able to hunker down behind a breakwall in order to block the gusting wind. Moments after, a long and dense cloud cover obscured our view

There was no color to the human eye (at least my old human eye!) but the cameras easily picked up the color.
Three different cameras used:
Canon t2i
Canon t3
Canon t3i
All were at ISO 3200
30 sec exposure at about f/4.5.
The images were enhanced with GIMP to bring out the subtle colors.

I was so bummed, we were so clouded in. Had given it up for the night around midnight in hopes of the sky clearing, let dog out and oh my goodness there was a corona staring back at me from the southern sky... just amazing, bright enough to adjust camera settings without a headlight, intense storm

It flared for all of 3 minutes! The rest of the time it was pale and either overhead or to the south, so faint that from the city it would have been invisible. Weird! Canon 60Da 2sec f/3.5.

WOW!! Best show in several years. Light pillars, moving curtains, faint colors. Could see starting activity even in twilight. Show really started around 11:15 pm MDT...lasted until midnight. At the height and intensity of display, local FM radio station went all static; then came back after display subsided.
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.
