Below is an unusual red aurora from Southern California taken on May 14, 2005 by Dennis Mammana in Borrego Springs, California, USA. I remember looking to the West just after sunset and viewing some very faint auroras in the Western sky in 2005, but they were nothing like the one captured below due to the city lights.
Now folks, this only happens about once every 10 to 11 years if atmospheric conditions are just right and there are no clouds preventing this magnificent view:
