Below is an unusual red aurora from Southern California taken on May 14, 2005 by Dennis Mammana in Borrego Springs, California, USA. I remember looking to the West just after sunset and viewing some very faint auroras due to the city lights in the Western sky in 2005, but they were nothing like the one captured below.

Now folks, this only happens about once every 10 to 11 years if atmospheric conditions are just right and there are no clouds preventing this magnificent view:

Behold:

The red aurora below is a more recent occurrence - June 7, 2015 --

SOLAR WIND SPARKS AURORAS: A solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of June 7th, sparking a G2-class geomagnetic storm. In the United States, surprised sky watchers from Washington to the Dakotas witnessed a rare display of summer auroras. Christian Begeman sends this picture from the outskirts of Isabel, SD:

Here is another aurora taken by John Crowley on June 7, 2015 at Priest Lake Idaho.
The purple color is considered to be "red."

An aurora from down under:

ANTARCTIC AURORAS: With the approach of southern winter, night is falling across Antarctica. The night sky, however, is anything but dark. "On June 11th, the South Pole lit up with one of the best displays of auroras anyone has seen in years," reports Liz Widen, a science engineer wintering over at McMurdo Station. "The show lasted more an hour."

Notice the bright white and yellow portion of the aurora. This is unusual.
Sodium vapor will charge as yellow. Magnesium as white.

Even California and Arizona got to view auroras.
If you heard a lot of natives talking late into the wee hours of the morning,
fantastic views of auroras could be the explanation.

A series of CMEs hit Earth's magnetic field on June 22nd, producing a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm. Northern Lights spilled across the Canadian border into more than 20 US states. Jason Brownlee sends this picture from Bend, Oregon:

Taken by Keith Breazeal on June 23, 2015 @ Kirkwood, CA.

The auroras were not visible but I aimed north for time exposures.
This was taken from Carson Spur(south of Lake Tahoe Hwy 88) Tuesday morning 2am.
The entire sky was filled with color in this 25 second exposure.
The auroras were faintly visible at times as a dull glow with the naked eye.
Canon 5D Mark III, Rokinon 14mm f2.8, ISO 5000, 25 seconds

Another aurora seen in California:

Taken by Bob Smith on June 22, 2015 @ Montague, California, USA

The aurora was visible on the northern horizon for approximately 2 hours. It was most intense around 10 PM Pacific Time - right at dark.

And one as far south as Payson, Arizona

Taken by Chris Schur on June 22, 2015 @ PAYSON, ARIZONA

Activity was low early after sunset, a diffuse red glow to the north. But several hours later - a burst of intense pink coloration to the north lasting about 20 minutes! This is a 5 minute exposure with a 8mm fish eye lens, canon XTi camera at iso 800.
