Kyriopascha - 2018 is the last Kyriopascha until 2075

Post by Maria »

This year according to the GOC calendar, Pascha and the Annunciation fall on the same day.

We have a special name whenever the Feast of the Annunciation coincides with the Feast of
Pascha. This special pairing is called Kyriopascha,, and it is very special because when
Our Lord rose from the dead it was the very day in which He was conceived in the womb of
the Holy Virgin Mary, the Feast of the Annunciation. It was fitting that Christ our God would
initially come into the world as a babe on the same day in which He would return in glory. Will
Christ our God also return in glory to judge the living and the dead on the Annunciation? We
will not know. It is not for us to speculate.

The Genuine Orthodox Church in Greece (GOC under Archbishop Stephanos) celebrates the
Annunciation on Pascha this year, April 8, as the Feast of the Annunciation is transferred to
Pascha since it falls on Holy Saturday (April 7). Thus, women will wear white scarves and veils
to church. It is said that our Lord rose from the dead on the Feast of the Annunciation, so this
is a very special day for us, which happens very rarely less often than once in a blue moon.

Kyriopascha reminds me of C. S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, where it was always winter
and never Christmas when the four children originally visited Narnia. On the New Calendar, it
can never be Kyriopascha as the Annunciation and Pascha can never fall on the same day.
Thus, it is truly a travesty.

Charlotteriggle wrote:

When Pascha and the Annunciation fall on the same day, it’s called Kyriopascha.
This can’t happen on the New Calendar. On the Old Calendar and Gregorian Calendar, the next Kyriopascha is in 2075.

As with Kyriopascha, Annunciation and Holy Friday can’t fall on the same day on the New Calendar. They can on the Old Calendar and Gregorian Calendar. When this pairing of holy days occurred in 1609, it resulted in one of the most sublime poems by John Donne, On the Annunciation and Passion Falling on the Same Day.

see: https://charlotteriggle.com/catherines- ... -calendar/

Even though the GOC will be celebrating Kyriopascha this year, according to ROCOR-MP calendar which I have in front of me, they will celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation on Holy Saturday.

Here is the poem by John Donne:

THE ANNUNCIATION AND PASSION.
by John Donne

TAMELY, frail body, abstain to-day ; to-day
My soul eats twice, Christ hither and away.
She sees Him man, so like God made in this,
That of them both a circle emblem is,
Whose first and last concur ; this doubtful day
Of feast or fast, Christ came, and went away ;
She sees Him nothing, twice at once, who's all ;
She sees a cedar plant itself, and fall ;
Her Maker put to making, and the head
Of life at once not yet alive, yet dead ;
She sees at once the Virgin Mother stay
Reclused at home, public at Golgotha ;
Sad and rejoiced she's seen at once, and seen
At almost fifty, and at scarce fifteen ;
At once a son is promised her, and gone ;
Gabriell gives Christ to her, He her to John ;
Not fully a mother, she's in orbity ;
At once receiver and the legacy.
All this, and all between, this day hath shown,
Th' abridgement of Christ's story, which makes one—
As in plain maps, the furthest west is east—
Of th' angels Ave, and Consummatum est.
How well the Church, God's Court of Faculties,
Deals, in sometimes, and seldom joining these.
As by the self-fix'd Pole we never do
Direct our course, but the next star thereto,
Which shows where th'other is, and which we say
—Because it strays not far—doth never stray,
So God by His Church, nearest to him, we know,
And stand firm, if we by her motion go.
His Spirit, as His fiery pillar, doth
Lead, and His Church, as cloud ; to one end both.
This Church by letting those days join, hath shown
Death and conception in mankind is one ;
Or 'twas in Him the same humility,
That He would be a man, and leave to be ;
Or as creation He hath made, as God,
With the last judgment but one period,
His imitating spouse would join in one
Manhood's extremes ; He shall come, He is gone ;
Or as though one blood drop, which thence did fall,
Accepted, would have served, He yet shed all,
So though the least of His pains, deeds, or words,
Would busy a life, she all this day affords.
This treasure then, in gross, my soul, uplay,
And in my life retail it every day.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

This from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annunciation

If the Annunciation falls on Pascha (Easter Sunday) itself, a coincidence which is called Kyriopascha, then it is celebrated jointly with the Resurrection, which is the focus of Easter. Due to these and similar rules, the rubrics surrounding the celebration of the feast are the most complex of all in Orthodox Christian liturgics.

St Ephraim taught that the date of the conception of Jesus Christ fell on 10 Nisan on the Hebrew calendar, the day in which the passover lamb was selected according to Exodus 12. Some years 10 Nisan falls on March 25, which is the traditional date for the Feast of the Annunciation and is an official holiday in Lebanon.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

From https://orthodoxwiki.org/Annunciation

Troparion for the Feast of the Annunciation:

Code: Select all
Today is the beginning of our salvation,
The revelation of the eternal mystery!
The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin
As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace.
Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos:
Rejoice, O Full of Grace,
The Lord is with You!
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

This is why, on the evening of Pascha, the Church chants: "This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

For the second creation began anew on Sunday, March 25, 5534 AM, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, just as the original creation of the universe was begun also on a Sunday, March 25.

Christ the new Adam appeared in the flesh after 5,500 years, the middle of the sixth millennium of days, because Christ fashioned Adam around the afternoon of the sixth day, as a type of himself. "One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

The LORD God commanded Adam to fast from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: "for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Adam lived 930 years, and then died. (Genesis 5:5). Since a thousand years is as one day with the Lord, Adam did not exceed the one day of the Lord, but died in the same day as which he ate.

The Chronography of George Synkellos (c. 810 AD)

A SELECTION OF CHRONOGRAPHY COMPOSED BY GEORGE THE MONK, WHO WAS THE SYNKELLOS OF TARASIOS, PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE, FROM ADAM UP TO DIOCLETIAN

'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." It is the beginning of the whole chronological process in the visible creation subject to time, when the heaven and the earth were brought forth through immeasurable goodness from non-being into being by God the Father through the only-begotten Son and Holy Spirit, the holy consubstantial Trinity, source of life. This is the holy first-created day of the first month called Nisan by the Hebrews and the divinely inspired scriptures, corresponding to the 25th of the Roman month of March, and the 29th of the seventh Egyptian month.' This fact is acknowledged by all our holy fathers and teachers and the holy catholic and apostolic Church. On this day also Gabriel foretold the divine conception in his salutation and greeting to the Holy Virgin. On this day also the only-begotten Son of the Father, after his ineffable incarnation from her and the complete fulfilment of the divine plan, arose from the dead; on this same holy day of the lifebringing Resurrection, the 5534th year from the creation of the universe commenced.

St. Anastasius of Sinai - Hexaemeron:

"Then at midday, indeed the afternoon of the sixth day (the five thousand and five hundredth year), he was made flesh and appeared on the earth, since around the afternoon of the sixth day he had fashioned Adam as a type of himself."

St. Irenaeus - Against Heresies:

"The Lord, therefore, recapitulating in Himself this day, underwent His sufferings upon the day preceding the Sabbath, that is, the sixth day of the creation, on which day man was created; thus granting him a second creation by means of His passion, which is that [creation] out of death. And there are some, again, who relegate the death of Adam to the thousandth year; for since "a day of the Lord is as a thousand years," he did not overstep the thousand years, but died within them, thus bearing out the sentence of his sin."

Hieromartyr St. Hippolytus of Rome (+235 AD):

"For the first appearance of our Lord in the flesh took place in Bethlehem, under Augustus, in the year 5500; and He suffered in the thirty-third year."

"But some one may be ready to say, How will you prove to me that the Saviour was born in the year 5500? Learn that easily, O man; for the things that took place of old in the wilderness, under Moses, in the case of the tabernacle, were constituted types and emblems of spiritual mysteries, in order that, when the truth came in Christ in these last days, you might be able to perceive that these things were fulfilled. For He says to him, "And thou shalt make the ark of imperishable wood, and shalt overlay it with pure gold within and without; and thou shalt make the length of it two cubits and a half, and the breadth thereof one cubit and a half, and a cubit and a half the height;" which measures, when summed up together, make five cubits and a half, so that the 5500 years might be signified thereby.

Exodus 25:10  And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
