Canonical Disparity in Ages For Marriages

Post by jdigrande »

Does anyone know if the Rudder specifies limits on difference in ages for potential married couples?

Is there an Orthodox site that has the complete Rudder on it?

I do not know. We are usually told to ask our priests these questions.

If a woman is ten years or more younger than her husband, then he might treat her more like a daughter.

However, if a man is attracted to older women, then he might have immaturity problems and may treat an older wife more like his mother.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

That was indeed insightful.

I might add - but don't anybody take offense - that for the above reason, it is unwise for a man to marry a much older woman or vice versa. Surely God will have arranged a spouse of the appropriate age bracket ; it's better to wait and find that right person than jump into an ill-advised match. Unfortunately, there may be a contemporary trend toward this lopsided arrangement which feels unhealthy psychologically at the minimum. Mainly it seems to be a rebellion against established norms just to be bad.

The current French president, Emmanuel Macron, "fell in love with" his much older and married schoolteacher. Eventually, the strange pair married, with the result that the French first lady is 25 years older than her husband. This is probably seen as avant garde by too many today.

An example of an older man, younger woman scenario on the world scene today is that the Syrian president is 10 years older than his wife, Asma. Historically, one only need to remember the disastrous example of Antony and Cleopatra. Prior to that, Cleopatra had had a relationship with Julius Caesar when he was 52 and she 22. This also led nowhere good.

Scribd is not an Orthodox site, but it can be read and downloaded here:
