Has anyone here ever been to Mt. Athos? Of course I am addressing the men. I just want to be able to have some kind of description and experience. Maybe a separate thread can be started. I don't think we have attempted that here yet. How about a thread of experiences on Mt. Athos?

Good idea !

A lot of people are interested, both men who may wish to visit,
and women who are simply eager to hear stories of time spent there.

Yes, I will try to put some things up here as soon as I can. Pretty busy these days that is why I have not posted much in the past 10 days or so.

Symeon,

It's been awhile. Do you have time now?

Ok. I will start a thread tonight. Look for the new thread in this same section of the forum.

I think this is all a dead letter at this point. With the new taxation and bankruptcy of Greece, Mt. Athos will not go unscathed. I am sympathetic to the monks and I believe they are right in resisting heresy. But I also think the time will come when they will have to be monks elsewhere.

"The spouse of Christ cannot be adulterous, she is uncorrupted and pure, She knows one home; she guards with chaste modesty the sanctity of one couch. She keeps us for God. She appoints the sons whom she has born for the Kingdom. Whoever is separated from the Church and is joined to an adulteress is separated from the promises of the Church; nor can he who forsakes the Church of Christ attain to the rewards of Christ."

There is a prophecy that Athos will continue until the entire mountain is submerged in the sea.

I remembered hearing this years ago, and have no source for it. I tried to look for it on google but all I could find was this little reference in a thread posting:

"When the ban on women is lifted by the Greek government a tradition says that the mountain will sink into the sea."
