It was planned euthanasia, and there was nothing our family could do.

This is federal birth-to-death socialism, a fruit of the so-called death panels, and it is ugly, painful, and immoral.

Lord have mercy on these state murderers.

Lord have mercy on my mom.

Lord have mercy.

Hospice care, and nursing homes, are not good places to be at when you are sick, old, or disabled.

The elderly and the physically disabled of any age, and who use nursing homes, account for twenty percent of Medicaid beneficiaries and seventy percent of that program's expenditures.

From time to time the horror stories that happen at nursing homes and hospices make it out to the national press.

It seems the people who work there do not enjoy their jobs. They should be providing good patient care, but they do not. They are there for the money.

Hospices are used for patients with terminal illnesses who have some six months of life remaining, Nursing homes, on the other hand, are used for Long Term Care for the elderly or disabled. In either case they both have families who can share horror stories.

Maria, why was she not an inpatient at the local hospital getting treatment? I'm pretty sure that at 97 years of age she would at least have had a Primary Care Physician that would have referred her to a Geriatrician; and, having a well established Electronic Medical Record that would have contained information on her allergies, which then could have been released to other providers, such as the ones found at that hospice.

Horror stories.

Madison has answered my question about the hospice situation. Sounds DREADFUL. Is there a way to escape it besides going to a hospital as he mentioned as a way better alternative in this case ?

The hospital will refer patients to be discharged to their homes or be sent (1) to rehab or convalescent facilities, (2) to skilled nursing facilities, or (3) to hospice.

Those in skilled nursing facilities will be sent back to the hospital periodically so that their nursing facilities privileges do not expire. It has become a real racket. This is why my mom opted to be sent to hospice because the time spent in the hospital was more dangerous than the skilled facility. She ended up breaking her hip and needing surgery when in the hospital. That set her back.

Long term skilled nursing facilities here in Los Angeles are the places where the permanently mentally ill are housed. Thus, normal patients can be molested by the violent mentally ill who are incarcerated in the skilled nursing homes. They are not great places to be.

Hospice care is set up so that those diagnosed as terminally ill will never have to go back to the hospital but can die at the hospice care facility. If they have survived for 6 months or longer, then that will be the exception. Once placed in hospice, it becomes a death sentence for the innocent.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Oh, thanks for the explanation. I had no idea the system is so nightmarish !

Would you guess that the long term skilled nursing facilities are made up of HALF [?] of the seriously mentally ill ? Or more than that ?
Of course, ANY such would not be a delight for any other inhabitants of the nursing facilities to be around.

What do you think ? Are there some places which have been built to avoid this woefully awful state of affairs in this industry ? For example, nicer quality, safer, more uplifting environments ? If so, are these priced out of reach of most people, I wonder ?

Did you get a chance to see your mother much in either the hospital or the hospice ? Or are relatives not really welcome in these inhumanly cold environments ?
