Notre-Dame Cathedral roof burns, spire falls

Post by Barbara »

"Notre-Dame cathedral, the symbol of the beauty and history of Paris, was scarred by an extensive fire on Monday evening that caused its delicate spire to collapse, bruised the Parisian skies with smoke...
The spectacle of flames leaping from the cathedral’s wooden roof — its spire glowing red then turning into a virtual cinder — stunned thousands of onlookers who gathered along the banks of the Seine and packed into the plaza of the nearby Hôtel de Ville, gasping and covering their mouths in horror and wiping away tears....“It’s apocalyptic,” said Eleanor Batreau, 45, who organizes pilgrimages to Lourdes and sometimes works at Notre-Dame...

A jewel of medieval Gothic architecture built in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre-Dame is a landmark not only for Paris, where it squats firmly yet gracefully at its very center, but for all the world. The cathedral is visited by about 30,000 people a day and around 13 million people a year.
For centuries France’s kings and queens were married and buried there. Napoleon was crowned emperor in Notre-Dame in 1804..."

Napoleon I's choosing to be crowned Emperor of France is considered to have rescued the venerable Cathedral from the demon-crazed barbarians of the French Revolution. These rampages were very similar to the Bolsheviks and their dupes who destroyed great Churches throughout the former Russian Empire.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow was blown up on December 5, 1931

The NYT article notes that only last week 16 statues of the 12 Apostles and 4 Evangelists were lifted up by a crane so that this monumental spire could be cleaned.

What was the cause of the fire ? The obvious investigation is being launched, but experts in construction of old landmarks say that for great edifices like this, sparks from a welder's torch can set off a fire, especially in areas with old woodwork.

I hate to see old architectural places damaged. Especially this one that survived two world wars plus numerous other wars.

Cyprian would have good take on what happened, there are some similarities with a Disneymovie and animated film in 2012,
Does any one else suspect possibly predictive programming?

Here is a very interesting short video that may shed some light.

Macron intends to build a modernistic diverse monstrosity in its place.

Most likely it will resemble this Vatican II hall:

What is this plan of Macron's, Maria ?

Now I can see the picture of that room above: gives me a headache just to set eyes on.

Meanwhile, an update : nearly 1 billion dollars has been raised so far :

"Presidential cultural heritage envoy Stephane Bern told broadcaster France-Info on Wednesday that 880 million euros (995 million) has been raised in just a day and a half since the fire. Contributions came from near and far, rich and poor — from Apple and magnates who own LOreal, Chanel and Dior, to Catholic parishioners and others from small towns and cities around France and the world....

Some criticism has already surfaced among those in France who say the money could be better spent elsewhere, on smaller struggling churches or workers. [ < = Yawn Yawn, that's the anti-clerical, left-leaning mentality characteristic of the 4th and 5th French Republics ]

Meanwhile Macrons 5-year deadline — which happens to coincide with the 2024 Paris Olympics, which the government wants to make a major showcase — struck many as unrealistic.

Pierluigi Pericolo, in charge of restoration and security at the St. Donatian basilica in Nantes, said it could take two to five years just to secure Notre Dame, given its size.

Its a fundamental step, and very complex, because its difficult to send workers into a monument whose vaulted ceilings are swollen with water, he said on France-Info. The end of the fire doesnt mean the edifice is totally saved. The stone can deteriorate when it is exposed to high temperatures and change its mineral composition and fracture inside..."

I tend to believe that in this one case, the cause is related to the ongoing repair work on the spire, which was a major project slated to cost $ 170 million.

But to what Disney movie from 2012 do you think this tragic fire harks back, OrthodoxinMichigan ?

In the vein of Cyprianic Analysis, one can't help but note the last name of the French government official mentioned early in the article : BERN.
I looked at it and thought only of Berne, the capital of Switzerland. But then I realized the strange 'coincidence' here !

Further detail from the NYT :

"The fire started in the cathedral’s attic, said Jean-Claude Gallet, commander of the Paris firefighters.

The attic is an oddly shaped space, seldom visited, that lies above the soaring stone arches visible from the floor of old European cathedrals. Diagrams of Notre-Dame and official descriptions of the space indicate that it is crisscrossed by giant, timber trusses that add structural integrity to the cathedral.

Image

“Once these massive timber structures start to burn, they almost never can be stopped,” said Jonathan Barnett, an international fire safety authority at Basic Expert in Australia. “We focus on their masonry walls and forget all the massive timber within.”

Each beam of the cathedral attic’s wooden frame is made from an individual tree — more than 1,300 in total — giving it the nickname “the forest.”

A dry space like the attic tends to accumulate dust and debris, making it even more flammable. “That’s where your risk really is,” said Andrew Tremlett, the Dean of Durham Cathedral in the United Kingdom, which has a similar wooden vaulted roof like Notre-Dame’s.

After taking over the attic, the blaze quickly spread across the roof and engulfed the spire, a wood-frame structure covered in lead."
