The Independence of the Monastery from Saint Sava's Typikon

Post by 尼古拉前执事 »

Saint Sava's Typikon for the Monastery of Hilendar
[translated by Uros Ocokoljich May 22, 1963].

Chapter 12 - The Independence of the Monastery.

I command all of yo in the name of God Almighty that this holy monastery be independent from all bishops and priests and all other monasteries and from any particular bishops. Let it not be under anyone's rule, neither kings nor ecclesiastics nor anyone else, but only under the Holy Mother of God, the Teacher, and under the prayers of the blessed and holy Father. (Simeon) and under the Abbot. This monastery should be kept and administered and governed by the Hrisovulja of the blessed kings according to which the monastery has its own authority; its firm and unchangeable freedom cannot be destroyed at any time. If someone wishes at any time to change this rule and tries to put the monastery under any other authority, whether he be of the clergy or laity, whether he be the Abbot or one of the brethren, incited by demonic temptations, let him be guilty not only of the Precious Body and Blood of the Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, but also be responsible to the Mother of God, Our Gracious Lady, and let him be anathema, as the Holy Apostles said and let the malediction of the three hundred and eighteen holy Fathers be upon him, and let him be the heir of Judas, the traitor, and participant among those who said: "Away with him, away with him, crucify him", and let him join those who cried out "His blood be upon us, and our children.

It was with much labor and difficulty that this abandoned place was renovated into a monastery; and upon its completion those who founded it commanded it to be independent. For if anyone, with evil and cunning intention. puts this place under the authority of evil and cunning men, who do not care for anything else, but destruction, he will be doing a very wicked thing, and will go against the will of those blessed kings who by their Hrisovulja gave freedom to the monastery. Let anyone, whoever it is, who not thinking disobeys this rule, be miserable and cursed three times over. How could this person not be guilty after doing such a thing?
