Searching for account of monk saint

Post by joasia »

Hello Forum,

I have a quick question. I'm looking for the name of the saint that met a child near the shore and the child was pouring the sea water into a hole in the ground. The monk asked what he was doing and the child told him that he was putting the sea in the hole.

The monk told him that it was impossible and the child responded that what he(the monk) was trying to do was impossible too.

Turns out the child was an angel sent to give the monk this lesson.

I remember reading this story but I can't remember who the monk was.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I believe it was Augustine.

And Augustine realized that even as the bucket could only contain a small portion of the ocean, so also the human mind can only contain a small portion of God since He is so vast and infinite.

But I'm not sure the story you are looking for was Augustine. I don't recall the part about the angel. I just remember the boy.
