Augustine is quite definitely a Saint; it's only in modern times that there have been these campaigns against him. He may have had some opinions which were not entirely Orthodox, but then again pretty much all of the fathers say a few iffy things, when judged by the consensus of the other fathers ...

I meant to choose Augustine of Hippo, but it appears I accidentally chose Ambrose of Milan, and Augustine's not even on the list....I guess you could consider this a write-in vote :P

There are plenty of books discussing it. I'd like some references, please. Every source I've seen has said he was the son of a Christian nobleman. Perhaps his mother was Jewish or something; I don't know.
