St Juliana Olshanskaya

Post by Barbara »

One of her Feasts is today, July 19 : the Uncovering of her Relics in 16th century. She reposed in about 1540

Here is a nice clip showing scenic views of Kiev Pechersk Lavra. It looks like her relics are THERE in one of the Caves ?
No subtitles : Russian language narration

St. Juliana Olshanskaya's relics are in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, with her raka (shrine) being in the Near Caves. She is only one of two women buried in the Lavra, the other being being Princess Yaropolkovna, wife of the Prince of Minsk, Gleb Vseslavich. Princess Yaropolkovna was a great benefactor of the Lavra and buried near the tomb of St. Theodosius in 1158 along with her husband.

There is also a relic of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk in the Far Caves, but I'm not sure if that counts. St. Juliana's relics were found by St. Elisey Plenetsky (whose life I translated into English) and she was added onto the Calendar by St. Petro Mohilya shortly after he became the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia.

Wonderful Saint and a personal favorite of mine. I know it is late but sprazdnekom!

Thank you for verifying that St Juliana's relics ARE indeed in the Caves, and the Near Caves particularly. That's great to know ; i had never realized that. But now that i know there are two women's relics permitted to be there, it makes sense. I had figured how could a woman be allowed to be present there, so was mystified watching the video.

Thanks for explaining all this, even the relic in the Far Caves !
Aren't they interesting to visit ? Nowhere else is quite like that.
