What is your favorite time of the Church year?

Post by Mary Kissel »

I was wondering what time of the Church year people on this forum consider their favorite and why it's your favorite time of the year. I would say that Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha would be my favorites because there's a lot of chances to go to Church... like for Akathists, the Canon of St Andrew, Presanctfied Liturgies for example. I will admit that it is tough to fast especially when 'you' drive by a lot of fast food restaurants on your way to various places. I also love this time of year because I was Chrismated on Palm Sunday, April 8 two years ago yesterday. I especially love the Presanctified Liturgies because of the solemness of the service...like during the Great Entrance we all prostrate and fall silent when Father processes with the Gifts(?).

In Christ,

My favorite time has always been Pascha...the weeks leading up to it and the weeks after it....but most especially Pascha. Some of my most treasured childhood memories are from that time.......sorry..I was cradle born....so, ya know....

Pascha has always held more for me than any other holiday --even Christmas

A close second is The Dormision Feast...I was fortunate to attend an all night service many years ago at HTM in Jordonville..it was like Pascha all over again!

Great question!

I always have loved Great and Holy Lent and the Nativity Lent, nor some reason the building up to the 2 big holidays was something I loved, especially the whole fasting and reading religious books and the Gospels* to be spiritually prepared.

*As a Catholic, it seemed I always got a confession penance of reading all of the Gospel accounts of the passion, so it has become a annual habit to do so anyway.

I also love Bright Week, going around greeting people with, "Christ is Risen!" and having them respond, "Indeed He is Risen!" My Traditionalist Roman Catholic friends do this too, which is nice.

My favorite time would be Pascha. It is a beautfiful service, and being from the north it means that spring is here.

I would have to agree with Nicholas that the great fasts are my favorite times of year because they are such a time of spiritual growth.

For me it would be around the Nativity. Above and beyond the obviously wonderful aspects of this time of the year(s), this is also the time in which 1) I met my wife, 2) I married my wife, and most importantly, 3) I was chrismated and became Orthodox. /\

Hi All. :-)
My fav would have to be the first week of lent, Easter & the week leading up to it. Unfortunately this year I wasn't able to go to nearly as many services as I usually do, as I've moved away from my ancestral abode near Jordanville & now dwell outside of D.C. Getting to church takes a good hour & 1/2 to 2 hours by public transport, (leave work at 5, service begins at 6, I'd get there for the last 10 minutes), so I missed a great many of the services, and consequently, I don't have the usual feeling of the lenten season.
