Some might say, of we are allowed to eat and drink in moderation, why not smoke in moderation?

Eating and drinking in moderation are healthy for us, but smoking, no matter the amount, is always bad for our health.

This is one reason that Orthodox Christians should not smoke.

Smoking is similar to being a suicide because smoking one is killing himself. Also the Church doesn't order to the deaconate or priesthood to those who have this bad habit. Because "if he cannot restrain to itself, then how will he be able to govern the Church of God?"

Of course, this is the correct answer.

However, I wonder if it was considered a sin before it was discovered that it may shorten one's life?

I think that in the past maybe it could have had the same impact in the Church that that when the women use too many cosmetics or pants in the Church, that is to say a non appropriate habit for a Christian.
