Rules on Prostrations After Pascha

Post by Matthew »

Christ is Risen!

I was wondering if anyone can give me the "low-down" on making prostrations after Pascha until Pentecost, and also if there is anything specific about prostrations on Weekends both at Home and at Church. I am confused after reading conflicting comments on various Orthodox sites.

I should have all this figured out by now, so it is embarrassing to ask. Forgive me my lack of knowledge on such a fundamental issue.

Indeed He is Risen!

No worries. Until Pentecost, no prostrations are done, in Church or at home. Meaning, during your usual prayers at home, for morning and evening or anything you may do in between, there should be no prostrations. This applies to weekends and weekdays. It's a joyous time of the great glorification of Christ's Resurrection until He sends the Holy Spirit.

But, perhaps you were referring to weekends aside from the Paschal period? If you can point out the parts you read about, then we can clarify the issue.

Outside of the Paschal period, Saturday evening, we should not do prostrations because it's the beginning of prayers for Sunday morning. And we should not do prostrations all day Sunday because it is the day of Christ's Resurrection. But, Sunday evening we can start doing prostrations for the rest of the week until Saturday evening.

Thank you Joasia,

That clears up my confusion. I went back and read some of the sources I had come across and I was able to see that I misunderstood the way it was worded. In any case, it was a New Calendarist site: Orthodox Information Center, which used to be more traditional (though Kyprianite). So, hearing you confirm the correct rules on it really makes me more confident about what to do.

Thank you so much!
