Coconut Crabs for dinner?

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Coconut Crabs for dinner?

No, these two images are not photoshopped, and if you look closely at the red coconut crab, it has succeeded in loosening one of the clasps, and will soon raid that garbage can. Who said that man was the only intelligent creature on earth?

Buzzle.com says that the meat from this huge coconut crab is delicious. It is a scavenger and will eat dead animals as well as fruit.

Coconut crabs are primarily found in two colors, red (ranging from orange to red) and blue (ranging from purple to blue). Crabs on the African side of their range, especially in Seychelles, tend to be red, while most other populations are blue. Like the hermit crabs, which are their closest relatives, coconut crabs use mollusc shells to protect their soft abdomens. However, unlike hermit crabs, coconut crabs build a hard plating over their abdomens after adulthood. The plating has to be molted annually, leaving the individual vulnerable while it is recreated.

I wonder how fast this critter can move?

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

No matter how fast it can run, I would run faster!
Anything spidery really creeps me out, although there is nothing better than Dungeness crab. Yum!

Yes, if I saw a huge coconut crab on my garbage can, I would run the other direction.
Since they are scavengers, I do not think I would eat it, especially if there were GMO fields nearby.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Are these, then, mainly in East Africa and that region ?
Terrifying picture !

I quite agree with Maria. If a scavenger, don't eat it !
We should stay with Coconut OIL instead....

But Lydia is right, Dungeness crab is a good quality crab. I haven't eaten any for
so many years, though, that I have forgotten even what it tastes like.
I can still picture, it however, dipped in melted butter on the table.

All shellfish, including crabs, are scavengers, which is why observant Jews don't eat them.
