As the Sun Turns: Solar Minimums and Maximums

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Today, we have had four M-Class solar flares along with continuous C-Class solar flaring, four greater than C5.

The times are approximate:

M 3 at 0430 UT (9:30 PM PDT, Mar 11, 2015)
M 1 at 1200 UT (5:00 AM PDT, Mar 12, 2015)
M 1 at 1245 UT (5:45 AM PDT, Mar 12, 2015)
M 4 at 1408 UT exact time provided by NASA
M 2 at 2151 UT exact time " " "

Edited to add another solar flare

Every day this week, we have been affected by continuous C-flaring with occasional M- or X-solar flares.

Today, March 15, we experienced a prolonged solar flare that reached an intensity of C-8. After studying the graph, I thought that we might be having a solar flare caused by a magnetic filament eruption. Indeed!

  • SOLAR FLARE AND CME: March 15th began with a bang. Between 00:45 UT and 02:00 UT, a magnetic filament erupted in concert with a slow C9-class solar flare from sunspot AR2297. This movie of the eruption comes from an extreme UV telescope onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

[See: http://www.spaceweather.com/archive.php ... &year=2015 for the video of this event.]

The combo blast hurled a CME into space: SOHO movie. Modeling by NOAA analysts suggests that the cloud will deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of March 17th. Will there be green skies on St. Patrick's Day? NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of geomagnetic storms when the CME arrives.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Today, May 5, 2015, we are ringing in Cinco de Mayo with M-Class solar flares erupting from two sunspots: AR 2335 and AR 2339.

So far these solar flares have been recorded by NASA at:

M-1 0947 UT (2:47 AM PDT)
M-1 1350 UT (6:50 AM PDT)
M-1 1425 UT (7:25 AM PDT)
M-2 1724 UT (10:25 AM PDT)

We just had another solar flare. Check the prior post with the dynamic graph.

Here is the global plot: Image

Didn't you say that one can feel more drained, tired during a Solar flare ? I certainly did today. Could that be a major reason, then ? Good to know that the 2 did occur today, 5/5/2015. I was expecting SOMETHING, i didn't know what...!

Exactly, these strong X-ray flares do affect us. I woke up tired , wanted to do some work, but did not have the energy, and just after the X-flare hit, I felt exhausted.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.
