No way! I do not want people knowing my Baptismal/Legal name, or what religion I am!

Should Baptismal or legal names be required for everyone?

Post by Myrrh »

I don't post here often, but I do come to catch up on posts. I would not have joined if such a requirement had been in place.

Why does it upset people when they're unable to access information about others? You say that some expressed that they wanted this, well let them say why and who they are.... If it's nosiness then adult behaviour is something they should aspire to, let them grow up rather than require others to comply with their desires.

If you cannot guarantee the principle of annonymity then this becomes a different forum, it seems to me a pity that you'd want to limit this platform. I'd like to see you grow and become a place where, especially all Orthodox, could come to debate and exchange information about the often confusing events of the times.

I've found in the past that people who make their affiliations known are often subject to attack for their background and whatever views they have are lost to discussion in the ensuing fracas.

Whatever happens here, I wish you well.

Still cannot after reading all the posts see any reason at all for change. I actually have given my baptismal name but had I a different user name and this type of change been foisted upon users would probably leave rather than be dictated to because some appear to have a need to know. That is their need and should not become an issue for any, I believe, who are comfortable with user names they may have long used and possibly use elsewhere. After all such 'user names' are quite normal on many varied and different forums.

How is it that another's "need to know" is greater than my right to remain as private and anonymous as I wish? You jeapardise too much with this requirement. If you go back through the posts, you will see that posters reveal as much as is necessary to have a decent discussion ( something truly lacking these days). Knowing who and what and where about everyone only fosters prejudice, malice and misery. It does not insure safety, honesty or harmony...... It's a bad idea all around.

Yes indeed, StephenG and Myrrh and Liudmilla. I agree with you.

The question of Why others want to know everyone's name? Why is it necessary?

what is there to hide? I've always disliked it when people hid behind pseudonyms. I've always used my baptismal name, and even at times my last name and where I live.

I think it will make many people think twice about what they write and how they write towards others.

Also, if we are Orthodox, we should speak truthfully and with courtesy. It makes me uncomfortable when I'm debating someone, knowing what parish they're from and I'm not sure if it is the priest, the priest's children or someone else.

...just my 2 cents. I'd prefer the mandatory use of real names, either baptismal or civil names.

So may we then assume that "1937 Miraculous Cross" is your baptismal name?
