Dear:Nicholas,

As a former Marine recruit,

Are you a former marine? Washed out of MCRD? Got injured?

and then for the last week or so, they re-teach you how to also be a gentleman and part of society, not just a robot-like killing machine.

3rd Phase/3rd month they teach you things like that.

Good luck, Nectarios!

If you get nothing else out of your military career, the discipline you undoubtedly will learn should help you in your future life as a monk. And neverforget that Vladya John is quick to help those who turn to him!

OOD, I don't see how what the American military does that is that much different from the Tsarist army or Byzantine with training...

I wish you well and hope you serve with integrity. :)

In the New Testament it is striking that Our Lord was impressed, by of all people, a soldier and member of the occupying Roman army.

Maybe the example of that Roman centurion might be your model.

As to the comments about what happens in 'boot' camp, what do you expect. All armies over centuries do the same thing. depersonalise and drill recruits so that they may act together in a coherent and disciplined manner. This process has saved many, many lives over centuries. It doesn't make it feel like fun at the time, though! Having said that look at the faces of a unit 'drilling', there is a real 'buzz' in it. As athletes say, "No pain, no gain".

All the best
