Remember in Timothy we see that the Lord taught many things that were not included in the Bible. How do you know that he did not teach this to the apostles and they passed it on in what became known as the Apostolic Canons? Remember He said, "when you fast ..." not "if you fast ..."
Fasting

That's true. But the problem there is how do you know. Heck, the apostles could not even understand some of the SIMPLE PARABLES.

Before Pentecost.

I KNEW that was going to be the answer. C'mon Phil, mankind was thick as a brick before Pentecost? They certainly were smart enough to decipher Gods teachings in the Old Testament.
I just got back from confession and it was good.
I talked to my Priest about these questions and issues that I have had with some of the teachings of the church. His first wanted to know if I had questions about the Faith or Praxis. When I told him just Praxis, he said that that is fine. That each person needs to approach the Lord in their own way. That the teachings and canons of the church related to praxis are there to help the faithful. That Jesus came to FREE us from the strictness of the Law, not to put simply remove the old yokeand replace it with one made of another wood. That church canons CHANGE over time in their applicability.

I beleive in one of the Gospels Christ was chided by the usually suspects about not fasting with the Apostles, and I think his responce was something about they only had Him for a short time and for that time the will feast that there would come a time that they would fast. I apologize for not remembering the specifics.
Yep. That certainly is true.
I guess my questions about the fast is related to whether rigid strictness was really meant for the laity? I can understand it for monks or for those member of the laity who have withdrawn themselves from the day-to-day world in order to concentrate on Theosis.

What difference is there really in the life of monk and that of every one else? Also not all monk are of clerical ranks, there are many lay monks.
