(Italy's Institute of Crystallography, using an X-ray technique, has confirmed that the Shroud of Turin is made of material dating to the time of Christ (Daily Mail, August 21, 2024, p. 3).

Wasn't there a big group of people in the 1970s making a fuss in the Orthodox world about the Shroud of Turin? About it's authenticity? I remember seeing a letter from Fr. Seraphim Rose where he mentioned "pointless debates" and noted the Shroud of Turin. Does anyone know more about what he was referring to exactly?

Know? I don't. But aren't you referring to the "scientific" dating which the papacy was mulling over at that time? The eventual carbon date was a complete farce, as I'm sure some of the articles linked above might point out.

I doubt Fr. Seraphim would consider the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin to be pointless, seeing as a holy relic of Christ bearing His very own blood is sacred indeed.

To know its authenticity is important, to have it in the hands of heretics is sacrilege, and yet to burn pieces for doubters is blasphemous. To me personally, discussions with the sort of people who wish to burn a relic just to satisfy their curiosity* as to whether the object burned was sacred enough to merit hellfire for the sacrilege of burning it, is "pointless debate."

*I would say "find out" but--LOL--no. People like that don't change their minds when data comes in.

So, that article I posted by Fr. Alexei Young was disputed. In those letters I posted above you can read what Fr. Seraphim had to say about it.
