History of Esphigmenou

Post by haralampopoulosjc »

In 1924, every single monastery on Mount Athos stopped commemorating the Patriarch of Constantinople, except for Vatopedi. In 1927, an agreement was reached between the Holy Community of Mount Athos and the Phanar, whereby each monastery (except for Vatopedi), agreed to retain the Patristic Calendar while continuing to commemorate the Patriarch. Esphigmenou, however, continued to refrain from commemorating the Patriarch while still maintaining communion with the commemorators.

My question is, did this policy of not commemorating the Patriarch continue all the way from 1927 up until the 1970s, or did Esphigmenou start commemorating the Patriarch again, at some point during the interim?

I believe in their own history they claim they were commemorating the Patriarch until 1978(?), so sometime between 1924 and 1978 they began to commemorate the Patriarch, but stopped. I know it was because of some specific thing in 1978 they stopped, but it's been a while since I've checked the Esphigmenou website.
