Very thoughtful post Seraphim. I agree with you. As much as "Traditionalists" want them to be -- things just are not black and white.

Yes, you are so much smarter than the rest of us Tom. Let us pray that we should all be as enlightened as you.

It's not an issue of whether I am "smarter" - because I don't believe that I am. I just think that people tend to swallow whatever they are told and do not first evaluate the issue against history and such. That is what we are supposed to de as learned, analytical people.

I would scream anathema at no one. I have not the Grace to anathemise anyone. Altough I think that I know enough to say that the simple humility of women wearing head coverings and dresses or skirts, and men wearing long pants is only the bare minimum, and I think that they should be practiced in every Orthodox Church. Whether every church practices these or not is not for me to judge, nor to point out, for non of us are without blame.

Evaluate the issue against history, but I do believe that you pretty much implied earlier to not look at everything in history, because some things might be irrelevant to this time period.

Now this I can agree with. You are basically proposing that we show respect to God by dressing appropriately. I agree 100% with you. And if ONE way a woman feels that SHE can show her respect is to follow the CULTURAL tradition of covering her head in prayer - I applaud that!

Am am not saying that it is WRONG for a woman to cover her head -- I am saying that it was THE primary way to show respect AT ONE PERIOD IN TIME -- but that is not the only way to do that now.

If we use history as a guide, we will see that it has only been in the last 100 years that the head coverings have started to be abandoned, even in some Protestant Churches. It really started to happen after Vatican II when the RC modernists threw out the requirement. Many Orthodox were emulating the RCs in following suit.

No, you misunderstand -- My point is that you have to be careful about taking things out of their HISTORICAL context. When something STARTS -- you have to look at the period to figure out WHY that particular thing started.
