Fatima Has Wide Appeal in Russia, Says Aide

MADRID, Spain, FEB. 16, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The Blessed Virgin's role in helping Russia hasn't gone unappreciated there, says a Catholic media official.

The Fatima shrine, for instance, is a "very special place for Russia, for Catholics as well as Orthodox, who are convinced that Our Lady contributed to convert the Russian people," said Victor Khroul, director of the Information Center of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Russia, in an interview with ZENIT.

Khroul said that "although I never knew Sister Lucia personally, I value very much her testimony and encouragement of the Russian people and we are very grateful to her as, thanks to her, many people have prayed for decades for the conversion of Russia."

Sister Maria Lucia, the last surviving visionary of the 1917 Marian apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, died last Sunday at age 97.

Khroul, who is also editor of the Catholic weekly Svet Evangelia, said that when one speaks of "the conversion of Russia" one must understand that it means "the passing from non-belief to the Christian faith," and must not be confused with being or not being Catholic.

Prayers for the conversion of Russia were a regular part of Marian Novena services here in Ireland when I was growing up. Having said that, it was never spelt out exactly what we were praying for the long-suffering people of Russia to be converted to. We knew we were praying for them to be converted from godless communism but it never seemed to be explicitly stated that we either wished them to turn back to their own church, Orthodoxy, or turn to ours, Catholicism. Somehow, I suspect the latter, given the whole 'consecration of Russia' theme of Fatima. The idea that Russia was never properly 'consecrated' still forms a perennial theme on traditionalist Catholic websites. Of course, in Ireland at least, the average Catholic was totally ignorant of Orthodoxy and of the fact that the Orthodox did not share their enthusiasm for this type of 'Marain apparation' .

I have been reading alot of things about the activities of the papists in Russia. It is utterly repulsive. The saddest fact is that there are many Russian-born who became clergy who are in complete support of the spiritual attack against the Russian Orthodox Faith. There are even those clergy who have stated that Orthodox and catholic faiths are identical! There are radio stations promoted by catholics. And these "clergy" stated the most absurd conclusions about the faith.

And let us not forget "Metropolitan" Nikodim of Leningrad who was a catholic promoter because he was secretly, a catholic bishop. He consecrated Patriarch Alexei II. He died in 1978, in the arms of Pope John Paul I.

He also promoted "Metropolitan" Kirill(Gundyaev), a former cell attendent. There are alot of bishops and archbishops who are promoting papism. It's no wonder that the Fatima phenomena is becoming popular in Russia. The people are trusting these men in rassa to guide them...and if they are guiding them to believe in papist innovations, then how will these ignorant people know the difference?

We should all remember them in our prayers and ask God to enlighten them to the Truth.
