A CHRISTIAN/MOSLEM DEBATE OF THE 12TH CENTURY

TRANSLATED BY KARIM HAKKOUM AND FR. DALE A. JOHNSON 1989

taken, with permission from http://www.teleport.com/~hamarabi/posts.html, dalej@colubs.com

This remarkable document is a part of a larger genre of Christian literature. Although dated 1165, the document which is in the hands of the family of the late Karim Hakkoum of Portland, Oregon, apparently was owned and perhaps copied by his father in 1914 in Aleppo, Syria.

We publish the first of three installments of this record of a debate between a Christian Abbot George and Moslem clerics under the protection of Saladin.

INTRODUCTION

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God, Amen. With the help of God, we begin writing a debate that happened between the monk Georgi and three Moslem theologians, in the presence of the prince Al-Khana, Al-Mushar Abul-Mulk, Gazi Al-Zaher Usef Ibn Ayub Al-Salah, the Moslem King of Aleppo and Syria, and during the reign of Leo the Armenian, son of Etienne, King of the Armenian tribe, in October 6615 from our Father Adam and 1165 A.D. God help us! The story says that the Abbot of the convent of "St. Simon the Fisherman" paid a visit to the King of Aleppo and its dependencies. The Abbot was accompanied by some of his monks. The King welcomed them, gave orders to secure all their demands, and allowed them to stay at his father's tent. Among the followers of the Abbot was an old monk who was very versed in knowledge. He spoke very well, too. Everybody liked to listen to him. he entered the convent in his childhood and profited of the books there; he acquired the virtues and the good manners of the monks. He was Abbot for many years until he became old. he was called "the monk Georgi" (George). When he met the Prince, he invoked God for him.

The Prince was pleased and asked him to have a seat. When the Abbot had been convocated by the King to fulfill all his requirements, the prince asked the monk (Georgi) to stay and continued talking to him and inquired about the convent and the mode of living of the monks. Let us relate (now) the questions of the Prince:

DEBATE ON NATURE OF MONASTIC LIFE

The Prince-- O monk, don't you eat any meat?

The Monk-- No! We don't eat any at all.

The Prince-- Don't you get married?

The Monk-- No, Prince; on the contrary, we avoid women.

The Prince-- Why? Is this from God? But he created humankind as a man and a woman. He said also: "...have meat for eating." (You may eat the meat).

The Monk-- We do not forbid (eating) the meat. But we intend to have a light life, not material, in order to be nearer to God by lightening our body. The iron is purified from its impurities the closer it is to the fire. And as water becomes clearer, the water allows the sunlight to penetrate (it)--Don't you see that the rays let the light pierce through as far as they're thin and transparent? Don't you know that steam rising from the ground outshines the sunlight? The reason, O Prince, that is inside of us from God, becomes dark with luxurious life, and it keeps us away from God at the range of its darkness. And with our distance from God we attach ourselves to the corporal matters and to the love of the actual life. We avoid not only meat and women, but all corporal delights and everything that charms the five faculties. We expect, by using these privations, to obtain the graces of God in His eternal kingdom. He said,"you will not get the joy in the eternal world, if you don't endure the sorrows and difficulties in the perishable world."

The Prince-- O monk, you are just right. But, God granted us these and those.

The Monk-- Our God permitted to you to do as you like and gave you the liberty to enjoy the corporal felicities when He says: "I'll give you in the heaven a river of milk, a river of honey and beautiful women."

The Prince and the Monk were talking so, when three theologians came to the Prince and saluted him. He ordered them to sit down. And when they saw the monk, they spoke with the Prince in Turkish, saying,"where is this monk from? for what purpose is he in your presence?"

The Prince: This monk is from Simon's convent; he came to us with other monks to resolve some problems with the Sultan (King). How do you like his appearance? One of them called Abu-Zaher, from Baghdad said, "may I be made your ransom, O Prince, he has a smiling mouth and a handsome face. How regretful that he is Christian."

The Prince: Would you like to have a debate with him in the matter of religion? They answered yes.

DEBATE ON THE SALVIFIC NATURE OF GOD

Then, they looked at each other. Thus, one of them, called Abu-Salamah Ibn Saad, from Mossul said,

Abu-Salamah (The Moslem) --"O monk, we revere and honor your Christ and make his rank over all prophets, except Mohammad, Prophet and Apostle of God. But you, Christians, decreased his esteem and you do not honor him, while God honored him and inspired him the Koran, as a light and mercy. You do not agree that he is the Prophet of God; so he shall confute you on the Resurrection.

The Monk-- Abu-Salamah, each question has an answer, But we did not come to your place to have a religious debate with you; But as petitioners. We do not need to talk to you, but with what it pleases you; because we know that the fury is yours and that you are boasting about that. A wise man said," Be cautious with them as long as you live in their house."

The Moslem-- Fear God, O Monk, because of what you mentioned. We are a people of law and justice; and nobody here is willing to discuss with you in a bad way.

Then, the Prince glanced at the Monk and said,-- "O Monk, I had been born from a Greek (Christian) woman. So, you can answer as you like, without fear. "Then he pulled out his own seal from his finger and put it on the finger of the monk.

The Monk-- Abu-Salamah, we do not want to give lies instead of truth. But we fear that you bring lies following the roughness of your nature. Don't you say that we do not revere Mohammed, nor confess that he is Apostle of God? Well, we will give you a clear proof from God (to ascertain our sayings).

The Moslem-- You could not succeed, at all, even if you try to do the impossible efforts.

The Monk-- The truth will appear. Abu-Salamah, don't you confess that God created all creatures?

The Moslem-- Yes, all which are in the heaven and in the earth; everything visible and invisible have been created by God, by His will.

The Monk-- Are there any people created by God and some people created by another God?

The Moslem-- No! The Creator created them and He is the One God I worship, and there is not another God.

The Monk-- Do you think that God willed the salvation of the whole world or He wants to save only a specified people among His creatures and destroy the rest? Don't you confess that God is rich, generous, and magnanimous? If you don't, then you attribute avarice to God; like a man who prepared food for a hundred persons, but when they came, he drove them out and said," Go away, I have no food for you!" By this way, he showed his avarice.

The Moslem-- I confess that God is rich, generous, magnanimous and the Creator of all creatures, and that He desires their salvation.

The Monk-- If God wants the salvation of the whole world, His messengers should be sent to the whole world, too. And anyone who pretends to be a Messenger of God needs a sign to corroborate his assertions; he needs also a power from God to confirm his message.

The Moslem-- What is the power and the sign?

The Monk-- Those that were with the Apostles of Christ.

The Moslem-- What is the power?

The Monk-- They are three: to make miracles, to speak various languages and avoid worldly things. While you have three opposite traits.

The Moslem-- Like what?

The Monk-- the menace with sword, tribute, and conviction. Those traits have been found in Mohammed. Evidence of God's Authority in the Apostles

Then, the Monk turned out to the Prince and said, " by God, O Prince if someone comes now to you and pretends to be a messenger of the King to you for so and so purposes, and you did not find in his possession a letter or a seal from the King , will you believe that he is the messenger of the King ?

The Prince-- By God, no! On the contrary, I'll consider him like a liar and traitor.

The Moslem-- What are the signs and the proof of the Apostles of Christ attesting their acquisition of the power to make miracles, to speak various languages and to preach in the whole world?

The Monk-- The sign is in your presence and the proof is evident: at any direction you look, east, west, south or north, you find the devotion to Christ at the farthest regions of the world. No one region is empty of it (this devotion). This is an evident proof that the Apostles of Christ traveled through the whole earth and spoke all languages. You cannot find a people, a language or a tongue without knowledge of Christ. The prophet David predicted that when he said," They went to whole earth and their speeches have grown in the regions of the world." This is also an evident proof that the Apostles spoke all languages. Do you have, Abu-Salamah, any doubt on those two things?

Abu-Salamah-- This is evident, without any doubt. Sermon on the Power and the Sign

The Monk-- I'll prove, now, that they made miracles, not by the force of their words, but by the power of their Sender, from the submission of the barbarian peoples to them. Their preachings were not dependent on their tolerance, neither menace, nor by the sword. They didn't take money. They were, in majority, illiterate fishermen and tent tailors. But the power received from Christ helped them to govern this world. When the Christ had sent them to preach in the world, He entered the room where they were gathered after His resurrection, while the doors were closed. He gave them peace, first because they were fearing the Jews. Then He blew on them and said," receive the Holy Spirit. This Spirit will be your voice. By this voice, you will raise the dead, heal the sick, and vanquish the Kings. If you remit the sins of people they will be pardoned; but if you retain them, they will be so. Give free of charge, as you received so." He told them also," Don't bear a staff, neither haversack not food; don't have two clothes, nor two shoes. Don't bear copper in your girdle." Now tell me, what's stronger of that sign? If you tell me that their orders were too soft, I'll answer you that those were not theirs, but of the Christ, their Master. Here they are, "To whom who slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the left one"; and, "if someone wants your cloth, give him your coat also"; and, "if someone uses you for one mile, go two miles with him. Love your enemies. Bless those who persecute you. Do good to those who afflict you." Tell me, who could listen to these ordinances and accept them, if the miracles did not astonish the whole world? Then, they believed them (the Apostles) and trusted their preaching. Look, O Moslem, at the preachings of the Apostles, as they preached to the speakers, scientists and the Kings, saying, "believe in God. He has been born from a woman; he ate food and drank water; has been beaten and whipped; people mocked him and spit on His face; they slapped him and put on his head a crown of thorns; he has been crucified and buried; (but) he rose from the dead." No one believed them. But people mocked them; denied their sayings, beat and chased them away. The Apostles said, " People, if you deny our preachings, we shall prove the truth. In fact: bring to us the crippled, blind and leper people, along with crazy, dislocated and dead people." They said, " In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up, you dead person." That person rose from the dead. As well as from other sicknesses, which were healed also. Then, people believed them and worshipped their God; for their acts testified for them. Some people closed their eyes and their ears, like the snake that closed her ears to avoid hearing the magician's voice. But those who worshipped Satan, through adultery, voluptuousnesses, viciousness, and avidity and the target of which was to satisfy the desires of their bodies: all of those became as a flume (of smoke) and their idolatric adoration is over. The heavens, the earth, God and his angels testify that the Apostles are the messengers of the Christ and that their religion is the right one. And your prophet, Mohammed also testified for them, saying in the Koran, " We inspired the Koran as a light and guidance and confirming what is in their hands (Christian) from the Bible and the Gospels." So, if your prophet and your Book confirmed the Gospel, you have to do so, otherwise you treat your prophet and your books as liars. Debate on the Integrity of the Gospels

The Moslem-- I trust the Gospel and all its contents. But you altered it to be as you wanted.

The Monk--Do not say something you can't prove, because, in the end, you will be ashamed, like that one who prefers to cover the sunlight. Tell me, Abu-Salamah, how many years had passed from the Christ until Mohammed?

The Moslem-- I don't know.

The Monk-- I give the answer: from the Christ to Mohammed, six hundred and some more years passed.

The Prince--You're right, Monk. That is what we found in the history.

The Monk-- Were the Christians, then, in the whole world?

The Moslem-- Yes, they were.

The Monk-- Like in the present time?

The Moslem--Yes and more (then they are now).

The Monk-- Could you count (the number of ) the Gospels which existed (in that time) on the earth (in the world) in various languages?

The Moslem-- We couldn't.

The Monk-- Let us suppose that some people in the West had altered their Gospels. So, how did they reach those who are at the end of the earth in the East? Same thing for those who are in the North towards the South. It's impossible. If that was possible you were, then, founding the apocryphal Gospels with a part of Christians. While if you pay for a trip over the whole world, you will find the Gospels in various languages analogous to those received from the Apostles of our Lord the Christ. No difference between any of them, even in one letter, except the particular traits of each language. I, hereby, give you an example which lets you believe me: If someone comes and shows a Koran different from that known to you now, and says, " this is the Koran inspired by the Prophet," while it is not, will you accept it?

The Prince-- No, on the contrary we shall kill him and burn his book.

The Monk-- How could you equalize the Master and the servant, the Creator and the created or God and the man? Debate on the Integrity of Mohammed

The Moslem-- Don't you know, Monk, that Mohammed governed the Arabs, and that he is God's Prophet and Messenger, because he guided Ishmail's descendants and passed them from the idolatry to the worship of the Living God, like what did Christ and his Apostles?

The Monk-- I know that Mohammed ruled the Arabs and passed them from the idolatry to the acquaintance of God, but not to the true acquaintance, because he intended to rule them in order to have them under his jurisdiction, much more than to give them information about the Creator. If you can be patient a little and calm yourself, I'll give you a testimony on behalf of me and all Christians concerning your prophet Mohammed, to let you know why we do not honor him, neither call him Prophet or Messenger.

The Moslem-- As the Prince allowed you to speak as you like and gave you security, and the permission to speak about Islam, you can say anything you want.

The Prince-- Abu-Salamah, the Monk spoke as it is suitable to the truth and as accepted by reason.

Abu-Salamah-- Give us what you gave about Mohammed.

The Monk-- You should know, Abu-Salamah, that Mohammed was from the tribe of Koreish, and descendant of Ishmail, son of Hagar the Egyptian, slave of Sarah, spouse of Abraham. He was an Arab nomad and camel driver. In his trips, he came to Jerusalem where he had been welcomed by a Christian Nestorian, called Buheira. When he asked Mohammed about his religion, he found him to be one of the pagans. Those were the sons of Ishmail. They worshipped an idol called AL-AKBAR (the greatest). They used to put around him poems containing desire and love written on tablets which they suspended over that idol. They served for prayers and had been called the seven "usudallakat" (suspended). When he (Buheira) knew that he (Mohammed) was from that tribe, he got sympathy for him, due to the similarity of languages, the friendship, and the desire of knowledge. Then he read to him some chapters from the Gospels, the Bible and the Psalms. When he returned home, he said to his friends, " Woe unto you! You are in flagrant error and your worship is null and unprofitable". They told him, " What is your problem, Mohammed?" He answered, " I found the true God." They asked, " What is his name?" He replied, " His name is ALLAH. He created the heaven and the earth and all creatures in it. He sent me to you as a light and a sign of his compassion." They said, " Could you show him to us to know where he is?" He said, " He resides in the heaven and sees all, but he is invisible." They told him, " We have a deity which we worship and honor. We inherited this worship from our ancestors who gave us the liberty to satisfy our desires with everything we own." Then Mohammed told them, " That one who sent me to you told me that he grants you what is better and greater than what you say." They asked, " What is it?" He said, " It is a paradise where he transfers you after your death. It contains food, drinks, and women." They asked, " What is the form of the food, drink, and women" He replied, " Rivers of honey, milk and wine, with beautiful women; there you will be not thirsty nor full of tears." they said, " Are you the Messenger of God?" He replied, " Yes." They said, " We fear our god AL-AKBAR." He said, " worship God and honor AL-AKBAR." Some of them said, " We believe in God, you said the truth," Then he passed through another group from koreish, Muhammed's tribe. He, later met another group. Those people allowed their members to marry their daughters and sisters. Those were their customs, before they knew God. Mohammed wrote to Buheira all what happened to him. Buheira prohibited those customs and with big efforts, he succeeded to draw them to the first cousins. When he got enough adherents from Arabs and their aristocracy, some remained reticent. Then he desired the monarchy (sovereignty) for himself and formed an armed detachment to fight his contradictors and said, " Those who enter the Islam, will be safe;" and said, " The inhabitants of the heaven and the earth entered the Islam by their will and (some) by force." Then, he attacked a group convinced another group with adorned words and arguments. His target was to rule them and rush them in order to reach the rest of women, because he was very avid of them. He desired them at a high degree. In confirmation of that, he was not satisfied with his numerous women, but desired Zeid's wife when he saw her and took her from him by force, pretending that God gave her to him as a wife, instead of Zeid. He spoke to his followers in this concern saying, " After Zeid had accomplished his desires from her, We (God) gave her to you as a wife, Mohammed." He pretended that God inspired him to do so. But his followers said, " Messenger of God, what God granted you is not permitted to anyone else."

The Moslem-- Woe unto you, uncircumcised! Zeid had asked him to take her and sworn that she will be unlawful for him.

The Monk-- He had to, otherwise he would have the same destiny as others.

The Moslem-- What happened to them?

The Monk-- Didn't you hear about the bedouin killed by your prophet, on his bed, while God forbids killing even the birds in their beds. When asked by his followers, " Who killed the slave?" "My sword," replied Mohammed.

The Moslem-- If you find some faults in the life of Mohammed to blame him for, you must confess that he had the biggest and most important honor and the greatest credit with God for what he did to Ishmail's descendants.

The Monk-- He guided you following his will, not as would like God. And Mohammed did not ignore that he and you are far from the truth and the right way, saying, " I don't know what happens to me and to you. Are we in the clarity or in the dark?" He said also, " Fear God as hard as you could, maybe you will succeed." And he assigned that in each prayer you request to be guided to the right way by saying, " Guide us (O God) to the right way." So, if you are right, then you don't need to ask for the righteousness. Bur he asks God for help. But let us forget what we said. Have an example about this. Suppose, O Prince, that I left your presence in search of without leaving the way guiding to the Fatherland . I'll not need guidance but the help to reach the Fatherland. .

The Prince-- Quite right,

The Monk-- If Mohammed knew that you were on the right way, he would not order you to request from God the guidance and the maturity. Besides, knowing that his prayer is not accepted by God, he ordered you to pray for him, and told you, " You, believers, pray for him and grant him salvation."

The Moslem-- Don't you know God and his angels pray for Mohammed? Don't we have to pray for him, too?

The Monk-- You should, preferably, pray for yourself and ask the pardon for yourself; not to be like that one who is hungry and asks food for others; or like that one who suffers from an injury and asks medicine for somebody else, So, if you, with God and his angels pray for Mohammed, who will accept your prayers? If this is your opinion, you equalize God and angels with the mankind.

The Moslem-- The prayer of God is a grace accorded to his worshippers.

The Monk-- Who has benefited from the grace of God and his angels doesn't need your prayers. You should better pray for yourself.

The Moslem-- Don't you pray, you Christians, on your Christ?

The Monk-- Absolutely not! On the contrary we pray to him, because he is our God and Creator and he accepts the prayer of his servants if they do, and forgives their faults.

The Moslem-- What an evident blasphemy and bad idea! You worship a created man, born from a woman, who suffered ignominy. That is what you confess, and you, Monk, do not deny that. You mock with insolence our Prophet Mohammed, the Chosen.

The Monk-- Upon my life, we do not bring anything from ourselves but from your Book and your Koran. Don't you confess that Mohammed was Bedouin and from Koreish?

The Moslem-- Yes.

The Monk-- Don't you know that he had many women, some against and some concubines. Don't you agree that he was so passionate towards women that he used the sword to kill those who did not obey him, and that he took Zeid's wife?

The Moslem-- Yes, that was God's order, for God inspired him to do so.

The Monk-- Don't you confess that he died and had been buried with thirty members with him under the soil? We mentioned only a few of the attributes of your Prophet, those which you admitted. So why do you contest it?

The Moslem-- Woe unto you! We contest what you make God a child, and that the Christ is God's son, and that he is Eternal God and Creator of the creatures while he is human and was born from a woman and God considers him like Adam to whom he said, " Be!" and he has been (created).

The Monk-- So, Abu-Salamah, you believe in all what your Prophet mentioned in your Book and that (this book) was inspired by God?

The Moslem-- Yes, everything mentioned in the Koran was inspired to Mohammed.

The Monk-- The Koran doesn't mention that the Christ is the Spirit of God and his Word given by God to Mary?

The Moslem-- Not eternal (word) but created.

The Monk-- Was God, at any time, dumb, deaf, or empty from any word or spirit?

The Moslem--God forbid! God, his Word and Spirit are always (present).

The Monk-- Is God's Word Creator or created?

The Moslem-- Creator.

The Monk-- You worship God along with his Spirit and Word, isn't it?

The Moslem-- I adore God, His Word and His Spirit.

The Monk-- Say now, then, " I believe in God, in His Spirit and in His Word."

The Moslem-- I believe in God and in His Spirit and in His Word. But I do not make them three, but one God.

The Monk-- This is my opinion, too; and my beliefs and those of all Christians of Orthodox faith. I like now to explain the meanings of the Holy Eternity: the Father is God; the Son is His Word; and the third (person is) the Holy Spirit.

The Prince was laying down. He then stood up, glanced to the Moslem, laughed and told him,-- " Abu-Salamah, the Monk Christianized you and introduced you to the Christian's religion; you are then Christian."

Abu-Salamah was furious. Then, a jurisprudent called Abul-Fadl Al-Halabi, told his friends: If you had permitted me from the beginning, I had a dialogue with the Monk and I showed you his defeat. Afterwards, he looked at the Prince and said, -- "Be informed, O Prince, that the non-believers are in the fire (in the hell) and whoever approaches them burns himself, and Satan who is the spirit of the tyranny speaks through their mouths."

The Monk-- Why do you insult us? Why do you attribute to us what is related to you and to your prophet? Didn't we talk and prove that the Christ is the Spirit of God and His Word from your Koran and your Prophet? If you are sure that what we cited is satanic, it should be from your Prophet and your Book.

The Prince-- Shame of you, Abul-Fadl! Your silence was better and more fruitful than your speech. I wish God had furnished you with silence and dumbness; then we would have been quite at ease.

Then Abdul-Fadl, ashamed, went away.

Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov)
Statement on Islam and Muslims

(selected from the saint's letters)

Vainly and erroneously you think and say that virtuous... Muslims will be saved, that is they will join intercourse with God! Vainly you consider the contrary notion a novelty, a brief error! No! Such is the eternal teaching of the true Church, both Old Testament and New. The Church has always confessed that there exists one means of salvation: the Redeemer! She has confessed that the most virtuous of the fallen really do descend to Hell. Did the righteous of the True Church, the illumined from whom shone the Holy Spirit, the prophets and wonderworkers, believers in the Redeemer's coming but with the demise of the anticipated coming of the Redeemer, descend to Hell so that, as you wish, the Muslims who neither recognize nor believe in the Redeemer receive, because they seem to you good people, that salvation which is delivered solely-- solely, I repeat to you, by means of -- belief in the Redeemer? -- Christians! Know Christ! -- Witness that you don't know Him, that you denied him in claiming the possibility of salvation without Him for some kind of virtue! Claiming the possibility of salvation without belief in Christ denies Him and, maybe not consciously, falls into the grave sin of blasphemy. "Therefore we conclude," says the Holy Apostle Paul, "that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." (Romans 3:28) "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:22-4). You will object: "The Holy Apostle James requires without fail good works; he teaches that 'faith, if it hath not works, is dead' (James 2:17)." Look again at what the Holy Apostle James requires. You will see that he, just like all God-inspired writers of Holy Scripture, requires the works of faith, and not the virtues of our fallen state! He requires living faith, confirmed by the deeds of the new man, and not the virtues of the fallen state, which are repugnant to faith. He cites the deeds of Patriarch Abraham, the work from which appeared the faith of a righteous man: this work consisted of offering as a sacrifice to God his only begotten son. To offer one's son as a sacrifice-- this is totally not a virtue according to human nature: it is a virtue as the fulfilment of the command of God, as a work of faith. Take a good look at the New Testament and in general all of Holy Scripture: you will find that it demands fulfilment of the commandments of God, that this fulfilment is called works, that from this fulfilment of God's commandments faith in God comes to life, as functioning; without works faith is dead, lacking any movement. And contrary to this, you will find that virtuous works of the fallen state, done out of feeling, blood, impulses or tenderheartedness-- are prohibited, repudiated! And namely for these virtues you like... the Muslims! To them, though it were repudiation of Christ, you want to give salvation.

Letter No. 203

You are blessed if you recognize the difference between the virtuous of the spirit and of the heart, between the virtuous peculiar solely to the New Adam, and virtuous which the old Adam is capable of joining: between the virtuous of the Gospel and the virtuous of our fallen state, the virtuous to whom are not strange idolaters, Muslims and all such people who shun the following of sacred Truth.

Letter No. 234

Faith is sacred and true only when it is faith in the sacred Truth, when it is faith which yields on the earth the human form of divine Truth, our Lord Jesus Christ. Any other faith, except faith in the sacred Truth, is superstition. The fruits of superstition are ruin. Such faith is condemned by God: it is the faith of idolaters in their idols, Muslims in their false prophet Mohammed and in the Qu'ran, heretics in their blasphemous dogmas and in their hereseiarchs, and rationalists in their fallen human intellect. With this faith will the Antichrist be believed by his followers.

Letter No. 236

There is no doubt that the action of spirits can be nourishing. But thus imparted to believe in them is impossible: if they occasionally speak even truth, it is in order to injure all the more reliably. At the present time their most important work is to let fall all that is true in the idea of God and of all that is divine and to glorify the idea of man in his fallen state, the more reason so to prepare the glorification of that man who extols himself above God according to the prophecy of the Holy Apostle Paul. Such an idea, which ruined men in paradise! Only it now uncoils more vastly. What Papism! What Mohammedism! This is only camouflage; this is particular activity. The Pope and Mohammed serve the fore-representation of the Antichrist...

Letter No. 358

Fr. Josiah Trenham
A Survey and Critique of Islam according to the Church Fathers

Islamic Dhimmitude: Peaceful Co-Existence? Introduction. Tonight is the sixth class of the winter quarter of the St. John Chrysostom Catechetical School of St. Andrew Orthodox Church. This quarter is dedicated to the topic, Christianity and Islam: A Survey and Critique of Islam according to the Church Fathers. Our previous five lectures were An Introduction to Islam, The Life of Mohammed, The Koran: The Word of God?, The Muslim Jesus: Just a Prophet? And Islamic Jihad and Terrorism: A Peaceful Religion? Part I.

Last week, in our lecture, we explored the essential role of jihad is Muslim religion. We began the lecture by surveying the contemporary Islamic propaganda aimed at the West attempting to present Islam itself as a peaceful and non-violent religion and the spread of Islam as a peaceful and non-violent process. Supposedly Islam did not spread by the sword but by its own "appeal" to the masses. In examining this "official line" of contemporary Islamic public relations we noted several things. First, that it is admitted that the initial spread of Islam in Arabia was indeed violent. We noted that this was the spread of the religion under its great prophet Mohammed, whose life is esteemed by all Muslims as a model to be carefully imitated. Second, we noted that the "peaceful conversions" of numerous people groups took place after they had been military conquered and had been given numerous economic, social, and political incentives to convert to Islam. This is what is described in Moslem literature as the "peaceful embrace" of Islam made "without coercion."

Additionally we explored in last week’s lecture the teachings of the Koran on jihad, or holy war. In many places in the Koran Moslems are called upon to fight the infidel. Such war in Islam is obligatory for believers and is itself an institution. It is the institution for the expansion of Islam in the world, and it is the means for funding the growth of the Islamic empires. The initial plunder of the Islamic conquests was institutionalized through the practice of dhimmitude, which is the practice of taxing non-Muslim conquered peoples.

We concluded our lecture last week by comparing Islamic jihad to Old Testament Holy War and to New Testament Holy War. We pointed out that, contrary to Moslem assertions, Islamic jihad does not share the principles of Old Testament Holy War and cannot find its justification in the examples of military battle in the Old Testament. We also emphasized that even Old Testament Holy War was but a foreshadowing of true Holy War which is the war of the Church of Jesus Christ against the unseen powers of evil. True holy war is spiritual war with the demons, not military battles with human beings.

In this evening’s lecture we will examine the Islamic practice of dhimmitude in history, particularly in its practice with our own Orthodox peoples. How have non-Moslem fared under Islamic domination? Is it true, as contemporary Islam asserts, that Christians and Jews have lived under Islam in "peaceful co-existence" and unmolested?

We began this topic last week by examining the early expansion of Islam under its first four caliphs from AD. 632-750. This important time period established the paradigm for Moslem treatment of conquered peoples. What history bears record to during this first century of Islamic expansion is a consistent pattern of pillage, destruction, enslavement and mass murder from Lebanon, to North Africa, to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Bat Ye’or in her groundbreaking study of this subject writes, "This general picture of destruction, ruin, massacre, and deportation of urban and rural captive populations was common to all the conquered territories in Asia, Africa, and Europe."[1] These facts are well documented by historians of all types contemporaneous with the Moslem expansion.

Dhimmitude. As Islam expanded to the West the majority of their conquered subjects were Orthodox Christians. They were also the majority of taxpayers in the early Islamic empire. Society was established on two pillars: the army and the subjection of the conquered masses. Initially, by necessity, the dhimmi/conquered peoples help many positions of social and economic importance in the conquered territories. Over history the leadership and possessions of the dhimmi peoples were systematically transferred to Moslems. Conquered peoples had no right to private ownership of their lands. By paying the kharaj conquered peoples were able to, in theory and by Islamic law, buy back their rights to possession of their lands and use of their goods. Bat Ye’or comments, "Even if Islamic law recognized the principle of the dhimmis’ right to possess land, history reveals a process whereby the lands, houses, livestock, and property of the indigenous population were usurped, a situation which does not appear in the law itself."[2]

Tax. Where did the practice of exacting the tax, the jizya, from conquered non-Moslems come from? It came from the Koran itself.

"Fight against such of those to whom the Scriptures were given as believe in neither God nor the Last Day, who do not forbid what God and His apostle have forbidden, and do not embrace the true Faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued."[3]

This teaching of the Koran is abundantly clear that Moslems are to make war on Christians and Jews. Here Christians are described as those "to whom the Scriptures were given" and as those who "do not forbid what God and His apostle have forbidden." This could be any number of things from confessing that God has a Co-Eternal Son, to adoring holy icons of the Lord, His All-Immaculate Mother, and the Saints. Moslems were very critical of the Christian veneration of Holy Icons. One of our hierarchs from the 8th century, Bishop Theodore Abu Qurrah, wrote a defense of the veneration of the holy icons in Arabic directed at least partially at the Moslem and Jewish populations.[4] What are Moslems to do with Christians? They are to "fight" and make them "pay tribute" until they are "utterly subdued."

This jizya, or tax, was graded in three rates according to the person’s degree of wealth. The Caliph Umar in AD 640 conducted a major census for the purpose of exacting carefully and fully this tax. Often it was extorted by torture. When Libya was conquered in A. D. 643 Christians were forced to gives their wives and children as salves to the Arab army as part of their jizra.[5] Here is a description of how it was sometimes collected,

"According to some jurists, the poll tax had to be paid by each person individually at a humiliating public ceremony; while paying it, the dhimmi was struck either on his head or on the nape of his neck. This blow to the neck , a symbol of the non-Muslim’s humiliation, was repeated over the centuries and survived unchanged till the dawn of the twentieth century, being ritually performed in Arab-Muslim countries, such as Yemen and Morocco, where the Koranic tax continued to be extorted from the Jews."[6]

On top of this standard poll tax there were additional taxes placed upon the conquered peoples, as well as regular kidnapping and demands for ransoms of the communities’ notable personages. It became standard Moslem practice to establish the religious leaders of the community as the temporal/ political leaders also responsible for tax collection. Due to the Koranic prohibitions for Moslems to "become friends"[7] with Christians and Jews and to certain hadith which forbade non-Moslems from having authority over Moslems Dhimmi peoples were consistently excluded from public office.

Law Courts. Besides these inequalities Christians faced great liability in courts of law. Islamic legislation did not recognize the oath of a Christian against a Moslem, and this was particularly grievous when, as was often the case, a Christian would be accused of blasphemy by a Moslem. The exceptions to this legal rule were in cases where a Moslem government, such as the Ottoman, was influenced by European law codes. Michael the Syrian records the following when a 9th century Byzantine Emperor asked a Moslem leader for an exchange of prisoners , "Al-Mu’tasim replied, "We, Arabs, can not admit the possibility of comparing Muslims with Byzantines [Christians], because God values the former more highly than the latter."[8] There is no commitment to the principle of the equality of all persons before the law in Islam, nor the equality of value of all persons by creation. If a Moslem committed a crime against a dhimmi the usual punishment was halved.

Places of Worship. In theory dhimmi peoples could keep their own places of worship based on the terms of the treaty of conquest. New construction was forbidden, but the upkeep and restoration of existing places of worship was in theory permitted as long as the structures were not enlarged or altered. Usually upon conquest a large number of churches were confiscated by the Moslem conquerors. The most famous of these is Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. This Queen of all Christian Churches was converted to a Mosque when the City of Constantinople fell to the Moslems in A.D. 1453. At the beginning of the Moslem conquests in Syria and in Spain one-half of the Christian Churches were relinquished to the Moslems to be converted to Mosques. Upon assuming a Church the Moslems would first destroy the sacred iconography, which was considered by Moslems to be idolatry.

I was deeply affected by a tour of the holy Churches of Thessaloniki, Greece. Thessaloniki arguably has the most beautiful Christian Churches in the world. Many date from the first millennium, and some from the 3rd and 4th centuries. There is a beautiful church downtown, for instance, that was built upon the conclusion of the Third Ecumenical Council in A. D. 431. For some four centuries Greece was under Turkish-Moslem domination. The Moslems were thrown out of Greece in the War of Independence in 1821, but northern Greece, where Thessaloniki is located, remained under Turkish control until 1921. Since that time the sacred Churches of Thessaloniki have been carefully restored. This includes first of all the removing of the plaster that was caked on the interior walls of the churches in order to cover up the holy icons. When the plaster is removed one sees numerous chisel marks where the Moslem craftsmen made chinks in the wall into the icons themselves to hold the plaster. There is a beautiful Church in a residential portion of the city that was concealed from the Moslems and was never discovered. One is able today to worship there seeing the mosaics and frescoes untouched and unmolested from the period prior to the Turkish conquest. Such cannot be said for most of our Churches throughout the previously Christian lands. Besides placing great restrictions upon Christian Churches, the Moslems also forbade Christians from entering their mosques. Some of these typical and historical Moslem restrictions on Christians have been relaxed in the last two centuries.

Islam also restricts Christians from the ringing of bells, the public display of the Precious Cross, and Christian banners. These rules are claimed by Moslems to have originated from the beginning of Islam. Christian cemeteries were required to be separated from Moslem ones and were often desecrated.

Various Injustices. Although the Koran itself forbids forced conversions, this has often been the case throughout history. Writes Bat Ye’or, "The whole history of the Islamic conquests is punctuated with forced conversions."[9] The abduction of Christian children for harems and to be raised as Moslem warriors, was a particularly perverse form of forced conversions which has taken place throughout Moslem history. A practice known as devshirme was introduced in the mid-fourteenth century. Christians of the Balkans were required to offer as tribute one-fifth of their children between the ages of fourteen and twenty, who were then converted to Islam and entered the janissary corps. They were most often taken from the Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian, Albanian, and Armenian aristocracy and from the children of priests.[10] Christians were assigned special living quarters, and their homes were expected to be less elegant than Moslem homes. Consulting Christian physicians and pharmacists was discouraged, and marriage and sexual relations between Moslem women and Christian men was punishable by death. On the contrary, Moslem men could marry Christian women. Christians were not to use Arab honorific titles, and it was a serious offense for a Christian to ride upon a camel or a horse. Christians were to ride donkeys, and often were expected to dismount while passing a Moslem. Christians were to speak in the presence of a Moslem only when spoken too, and always in a low voice. In some Moslem countries like Yemen and Persia dhimmis were expected to construct their doors short enough that they would have to bend down to enter their homes. In 14th century Damascus Christians were expected to keep the threshold of their shops below street level so that they would always be in an inferior position before Moslems.[11] Christians living in the Phanar region of Constantinople were expected to paint their homes in dark colors until the middle of the 19th century. Arabs invented the idea of discriminating by way of clothing, requiring Christians to wear certain clothes, cut their hair a certain way, wear particular turbans and shoes. In some regions like Persia Christians were barred from public baths, and in other regions like Egypt and Palestine they were required to wear small bells to mark them when their clothes were off. This type of exclusion was more typical in Arabized countries and not in the Moslem countries more intimately affected by Europe.

Slavery. Often tribute of conquered lands included the giving of a fixed number of individuals as slaves. The regular raids on villages and the expansion of Islam into ever new territory provided a large slave market. When Ephesus was sacked in A. D. 781 seven thousand Greek men were taken as slaves. When Thessaloniki was attacked in A. D. 903 the number was twenty-two thousand. When Constantinople was captured in A.D. 1453 fifty to sixty thousand Orthodox Christians were deported and enslaved, and the city was repopulated with thousands of Moslems, and Jews and Christians from other parts of Moslem lands.[12] This practice of enslaving Christians and Jews of the dhimmitude went on for centuries right up to the sale of thousands of Ottoman Armenian women and children in 1915-1917. It is sadly ironic that so many African-Americans, fleeing Protestantism as "the white man’s religion" and as "slave religion" and embracing Islam as "authentically African", have fled in reality into the arms of a religion that mastered and propagated the slave trade itself.

Inter-Muslim Warfare. On top of the difficulties directed against them directly, the dhimmi peoples often suffered from the constant inter-Muslim wars that have raged throughout history.

Sale of a Christian Family in Constantinople , Ellendigh (1663)

Conclusion. Summarizing the life of the dhimmi peoples Bat Ye’Or writes, "Nothing could be more illusory than to imagine the dhimmi populations enjoying a definitive guaranteed and stable status."[13] And again she writes, "Scribes, secretaries, treasurers, accountants, architects, craftsmen, peasants, doctors, scholars, diplomats, translators, and politicians, the Christians formed the base, the texture, the elite, and the sinews of the Muslim empire. It is probable that without their collaboration the creation and expansion of this empire would not have been possible. The conquered Christian masses placed all the resources- all the proficiency, the accumulation of technical skills, and sciences built up by earlier civilizations- at the service of nomad chiefs or seminomad Arabs and, later, of Turks. Islamic literature, science, art, philosophy, and jurisprudence were born and developed not in Arabia, within an exclusively Arab and Muslim population, but in the midst of conquered peoples, feeding off their vigor and on the dying, bloodless body of dhimmitude."[14]

  The Hellenic Genocide

The Hellenic Genocide > Introduction

"The Armenians are not the only subject people in Turkey which have suffered from this policy of making Turkey exclusively the country of the Turks. The story which I have told about the Armenians I could also tell with certain modifications about the Greeks and the Syrians. Indeed the Greeks were the first victims of this nationalizing idea."

Ambassador Morgenthau's Story
CHAPTER XXIV
Henry Morgenthau - 1918

Photo: Turkish soldiers posing proudly with heads of their victims.

Introduction

The Hellenic Genocide was the systematic torture, massacre and ethnic cleansing of several millions Hellenes (Greeks) perpetrated by the Turks in Asia Minor, Constantinople (now called Istanbul by the Turks), Eastern Thrace, Imvros, Tenedos, Macedonia, Cappadocia and Pontos.

Most of the victims were massacred between 1895 (much earlier than the World War I) and 1955 (much after the World War II). The present estimate is that some 2.000.000 Greek children, men and women of all ages were killed during that period.

In the same places and often at the same time, the Turks tortured and massacred millions of Armenians and Assyrians of all ages. The fact that the three nations were victims of the same extermination policy is another proof of each of the three Genocides. It was not a "war", it was not a "revolt". It was a planned effort of extermination. It was an effort of the Turks to get rid of their former slaves, since they were not useful anymore. It was an effort to create a "Turkey for the Turks", as the Turkish leaders called it, in the lands of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks still under Turkish occupation. The Turks had invaded the lands of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks. Since they couldn't continue to use them as slaves, they decided to exterminate them. And they did it.

It was not a "religious fight" either. The persecution of the Kurds, who are Muslims like the Turks, began as soon as most of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, who are all Christians, had been exterminated. The Kurds were misled into thinking that by helping the Turks to exterminated the "infidels", as the they referred to the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, they would have a land of their own. The Kurds did help the Turks but only to become the next victims of the plan to create a "Turkey for the Turks". The persecution of the Kurds was a natural consequence. After all, the objective of the Turkish leaders was not a "Turkey for the Muslims".

In a way, the Hellenic Genocide still didn't end, as its few survivors are persecuted right now in all territories ruled by the Turks, especially in Constantinople and Imvros. For instance, in Imvros, in 1999, a six years old Greek boy was burned alive by the Turks. The Orthodox Patriarchate, located in Constantinople, which has a similar meaning as the Vatican, is attacked often. The rights of the few survivors of the Hellenic Genocide are shamefully denied. The Treaty of Lausanne is continually disrespected. Even the frequent invasions by Turkey of the airspace and the territorial sea of Greece (which amount to hundreds every year), can be considered reflexes of its extermination policy. If for the Turkish rulers, the Greeks don't have the right to live, they don't have any rights.

This site will contain a detailed work on the Hellenic Genocide. It will analyse all aspects of that crime against humanity, with documentation from many sources, including recent ones.

Until the work is completed, please see a related work by the same author, published in 2001 (available only in English so far). It contains hundreds of accounts on the Hellenic Genocide from eyewitnesses from several nations, as well as hundreds of photographs, several maps, posters, documents and films. The work has many references to the Armenians and Assyrians. It's not possible to research any of the three Genocides using accounts of eyewitnesses without researching also the other two.

The work uses only quotes from documents that are completely and freely available on the Internet, which are linked to each quote used. Thus, there's no risk of anything being used out of its original context and the reader can easily extend their research.

The Testimony of a Convert from Islam
Dear Father:

The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you!

I am Timothy Abraham, an ex Muslim fundamentalist Christian convert. My Egyptian name is Ibrahim Arafat. I have been fascinated with Orthodox depth in the lives of saints of the Desert Fathers and Orthodox Mystics such as John Chrysostom, Athanasius for sure and such the like. I really want to read their books in particular and other books of this kind of depth of spirituality (in Arabic and English) as well, but I cannot afford to buy their books. For one thing, I am a student and for another I am newly married. Can you send me their books please? I don't care how used or damaged they are- what matters the most is that I will be enriched spiritually as I see how these saints lived and imitated Christ our Lord. Would it also be possible to send me books which you wrote? I know that Orthodox mystics and pietists have a lot to offer to both the new and advanced believer, and I want to have that blessing. I have been a student in Baptist seminary. Nobody there would believe that Orthodox are born again or are people of God. I want to help correct this image. I am less biased because of my journey shift from Islam into Christianity in its broad sense. I don't allow anybody to brainwash me as Muslims did in the Islamic Brotherhood in my village in Egypt. I want to delve into Orthodox mysticism and deep spirituality. I don't have access to any friends nearby who would provide this kind of books. In the South, it is mostly Southern Baptist. So, please help me. Would it be possible to keep the friendship and continue writing? Whatever you share with me would also be shared in charitable love with a number of Coptics who hear me in the Middle East over Voice of Hope. Your blessing me would extend to hundreds of Muslims and Coptics.

Please find below a copy of my conversion account so that you would pray for me and encourage me in serving Christ the exalted Lord of creation. I want to enrich my spiritual inner life. I don't want to be like a parrot and say that Catholics are going to Hell when I even didn't have a chance of reading indepth what they have to say. I have a lot to learn and I am coming to you to teach me. May the Lord bless you according to His glorious richness in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sincerely,

Timothy Abraham

I am Timothy Abraham (this is my Christian alias), a simple Egyptian from the Delta region. Farms surrounded me from every side with streams of the luxurious Nile river endowing life with fertility. I had a strong Islamic upbringing in my childhood, studying in the village shop for teaching the Quran (al-Kutaab). They taught me to fear God (Allah in Arabic) who created the Heaven and the earth in six days. There was not a single reason to doubt a religion which emphasized fearing God, doing good work and living a moral life. The recitation of the Quran was meant to produce a sense of tranquillity. I enjoyed the Sufi circle of worship, as they adored the person of Muhammad. This was Abu-al-azayem's group. I was searching for more closeness with Allah Almighty.

One evening around 7:00 p.m. in al-Mahatta mosque, having finished praying al- Maghrib prayer, I was introduced to Muhammad Imam and Sulleiman Kahwash. They were vitally influential in incorporating me into their group "The Muslim Brotherhood -- i.e. al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin." They encouraged me to be a devout Muslim and fast on Monday and Thursday of every week and break the fast with them in the mosque where we ate bread, cheese, palm dates (tamr), and delicious salad.

I diligently imitated every thing the Prophet Muhammad did, even the sitting posture of the Prophet as he was eating. They were so kind to me. They also saw in me the potential of being an eloquent speaker. Therefore, Sulleiman Hashem, the leader at the time, approached me gently, "Ibrahim, you are called by the Quran's teaching to proclaim the message of Islam "da'awah." "My Allah!" I pondered. "I am just 14 years old and I am easily intimidated." Nevertheless, Sulleiman gave me a stack of books to study in preparation for the sermon I was to deliver the next day.

From then on, it became customary for me to preach a sermon on the first Monday of every lunar month. I was filled with zeal as my leaders had arranged for me to go across the neighboring towns, preaching from mosque to mosque. I zealously wanted everyone to follow the Tradition of the Prophet Muhammad, and subsequently, my sister had no choice but to obey my Quranic command and wear the veil which indicated modesty. I needed my father's approval. I wondered if he had ever heard his son, the 14 year old Muslim evangelist preach. To my astonishment my father was sharply criticized by people for having a son who was now a "fanatic." My father became wrathful over my Islamic radicalism and thoughtlessly punched me in the teeth. Today my front tooth is a fake one. It reminds me of my former perseverance to the point of death to be a zealous Muslim fundamentalist and my willingness to be persecuted for my commitment. My father burnt my Sunni (mostly wahabi and salafi) Islamic library.

I was never daunted by any of this and continued to preach Islam everyday in the morning parade (taboor as-sabah) as well as in every mosque where I went to teach. It never occurred to me for a second that Islam could be wrong. In my pursuit to propagate Islam everywhere, a magazine came into my hands which had pen pal addresses from the United States. I chose one at random and wrote, hoping to convert the man into Islam. I wrote to John from Pennsylvania, USA back and forth for two years, each trying to convert the other. I read every book I could get hold of to refute the Bible. To make things worse, I had no respect for the Bible as I put my feet and shoes on it since the Quran taught me it was corrupt.

Then John surprised me by coming to visit me in my village. That was the first time I saw a real Christian. His sincerity, frankness, genuineness, and openness impressed me. John stayed with me for two months. He had an amazing prayer life which served as a model for me in my latter life. I did not know that Christians prayed until I saw a "living epistle" right in the middle of my house, a man from a far off land who became one of us and genuinely incarnated the love of Christ. John had an amazing prayer life, for he prayed more than he talked, speaking the words of the Bible. I became jealous of John's intimacy with God and increased my recitations of the Quran.

The Quran presents a god who is on the look out for ways of tormenting his slaves. A Muslim may do as many good works as possible in this world and on the Day of Judgment God weighs the deeds of every individual in a "balance." The good deeds will be placed in one pan of the balance, and the evil deeds in the other. If the good deeds are heavier, then the believer will go to the paradise described in Quran as a place of sexual pleasure and frolicking with the wide-eyed huris (sura al-Waqia 56:20-23). However, Christ our Lord said: "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven" (Matthew 22:30). My Muslim friend, according to Islam, if your evil deeds are heavier, you will be cast into the fires of hell. It looks like you would need to be only fifty-one percent good to get into paradise. Yet you remain absolutely unsure whether or not you are going to heaven. All you say, my Muslim friend, is, "Only God Knows!" You hope for the mercy of Allah and hope that the angels or the Prophet will intercede for you in the last day, so you will be saved from Hell.

I was like you my Muslim sister or brother, right in the same boat until I knew that you can be absolutely sure of going to Heaven. Tears well up in my eyes just to recall how lost I was and now that I am found. While trembling in tears, seeing the majesty of God, I rejoice to know that I have eternal life for certain.

God in the Bible is both just and merciful. His justice requires that everyone be punished in Hell, for He is perfect 100 percent. No matter how hard we try to please God, we always fall short of His perfection. Our good works will not bring us closer to God. God saw our insufficiency, and decided to pay the penalty Himself. He sent His Word Isa Al Masih (Jesus Christ), who is absolutely sinless and faultless to carry the punishment of our sins on the cross. What can you say to the Judge when He chooses to pay your penalty for you? The Bible says in John 3:16:- "For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." It is because God loves us that He sent His Word, Jesus Christ, to die for us. Islam never grants us the assurance of going to Heaven, but Christ absolutely does! Praise God! Thank you, my Lord, for sovereignly choosing to pay the price Yourself in the Person of Your incarnate Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the express revelation of the nature of Allah Almighty.

After John left, his influence stayed. I thought I would depress John by saying, "John, your visit made me a stronger Muslim in the faith and do not try to convert Muslims anymore." Yet John prevailed in his supplication and prayers. His intercessory prayer moved to LORD to wake me up in the middle of the night as I had no sleep or rest. Inner conflict reached its zenith. Restless, I reached out to my Bible and opened it at random.. I found, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" For the first time in my life, I began asking the question "why?" and challenged everything I took for granted. All postulates were critically examined. This got me into trouble in an authoritarian society. Questions, they say, fly in the face of Allah. Obey. That is All. In the Islamic Brotherhood, our motto was "samaana wa ataana" i.e. "we have heard and obeyed." After years of study, I came to two logical conclusions: The Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and Jesus is the Word of God. I began to see it was possible for Jesus to be God. Intellectually, I accepted all the claims of the Christian faith, but in my heart I still feared being struck dead for calling the Almighty God:- "My Father." I needed a miracle! The Bible teaches us that no one can say, "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3). No wonder every Salvation experience is one of a miracle of birth out of death into eternal life!

From the depth of my heart, in the midst of inner conflict, I cried out to Allah, even in the mosque, "Lord, show me the truth! Is it Jesus or Muhammad? Could it be that You are my Father? Show me the truth, and the truth you lead me to I will serve all my life whatever the cost may be!" I burst into tears since I knew the cost could be outrageously too high for a weak, thin person like me. For how could I afford to be cast out of my family and sleep on the streets like a homeless person? And what if my leaders in the Islamic Brotherhood would find out about me? And what if they, in their Islamic righteously and zeal, rush on to defend Islam and kill me? According to the Islamic religion, an apostate should be given a three day opportunity to recant, and after that the infidel's blood is legitimately shed in the name of Allah! The words of the Prophet Muhammad kept ringing in my ear, "Any person (i.e. Muslim) who has changed his religion, kill him." T his tradition has been narrated by Abu Bakr, Uthman, Ali, Muadhibn Jabal, and Khalid ibn Walid. Yet I persisted in asking God to guide me.

One night Christ appeared to me in a dream and said with a tender sweet voice, "I love you!" I saw how obstinately I had resisted Him all these years and said to Him in tear, "I love You, too! I know You! You are eternal for ever and ever." I woke up with tears all over my face filled with abundant joy, believing that Christ Himself touched both my mind and my heart, and I yielded. I was filled with great passion for Christ, jumping up and down, singing praises to His name and talking to Him day and night. I would not even sleep without God's inerrant Word, the Bible, next to my chest.

I experienced what a "spoiled child" of God would: God would give me anything I ask for in prayer. But then the Lord wanted me to love Him and worship Him for His own sake, not for what I get from Him. I tried to keep my faith secret and so was baptized secretly in a pastor's house.

Filled with the joy of salvation I could not hide or deny Christ anymore. Therefore, when my childhood friend asked me if Christ was crucified, I answered, "Yes!" and explained why. He prayed with me to receive Christ. He was shaking and perspiring every time he prayed with me. He could see how mighty the name of our Lord Jesus was. My former leaders in the Islamic fanatical group, desiring to know who the spearhead was, threatened to kill him if he would not tell them everything about my evangelism. Sadly, he betrayed me and I was beaten up in front of the mosque where I had formerly preached Islam zealously. In their sight I was a blasphemous infidel who deserved to be killed unless I would recant. They regarded my conversion as the most horrendous form of desecrating Islam and the Quran.

Since my secret conversion was now made public and Muslims plotted to kill me, I had to flee. I was hunted by Muslims from my village in the Delta, to Ismalia until I arrived in Cairo where my Christian friends lived. Yet Christians were not willing to shelter me and I had to go back to the village, seeking refuge in His protective hands. I came back from Cairo and found an angry mob of Muslims filling up our house. My mother was wearing the garment of mourning, dressed in black as is the custom in Egypt. To them by deserting Islam, I was dead!!! Muslim women yelled at me, "Your mother doesn't deserve all this from you. Why cause her all this grief?" Another woman lamented, "Poor mother! Here son left her for the Christian infidels. If I were her, I would kill my son for running after the infidels like a dog." I received a letter from a friend in Jordan who reported that my father was walking down the streets in Jordan weeping bitterly as Muslim laborers there reproached him severely. He stayed sick in bed for a month because of this until he and I talked on the phone.

It is absolutely unforgettable that outraged Muslims broke into our house barbarically. My mother knelt down at the feet of our neighbor "Sayed" begging him to spare my life and kill her instead. In such indescribable agony, my mother disowned and disinherited me before all people in my village. I love my mother more dearly than any person in this world, but no human power, regardless of how gigantic it is, can separate me from the love of Christ. I will always live for Jesus.

My Bible, all my Christian books, and music tapes were confiscated and burnt. I decided to flee from the Delta region to Cairo. Even though the police were tracking me down, the Lord blinded their eyes and protected me. In Cairo, I was hiding at M.'s, an Egyptian Baptist friend who was comforting me all the time. I broke down when he read,

"So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name" (Acts 5:41)

I am grateful to God for providing this friend, M., who discipled me, teaching me to live a victorious life rich in worship and thanksgiving. He gave me a pocket Arabic New Testament and told me frankly that his parents were afraid. Also I was told that if they continued to hide me they would be in jail forever. I had nowhere to go. So, upon the advice of my secret pastor, I went back to the village, hiding the Arabic New Testament in my socks, praying that it would not fall out. I was eventually arrested and released repeatedly. I learned what it means to have God as my only Hiding Place. In prison, my Savior knows I have come to experience true peace. I was not shaken because I saw Christ in prison, not myself. I sang songs of joy in the midst of tears, anticipating the shining Morning Star to come and deliver me. I decided to hide the Bible in a place where the police could not confiscate it -- in my heart by memorizing it. I have since made it a habit to sleep with my Bible by my side. Five years later, I managed to flee Muslims' attempts to kill me and I was shocked to find out that there are some professing Christians in America who attack the Bible for which I was willing to die. God's word has given me promises of faith which I apply as a little child and pray them through in confidence. The gates of Heaven open open as we pray through God's Word. His word speaks life!!!

Once when I went to give my mother a Mother's Day gift, she asked me rhetorically, "Mother's Day gift?" I answered, "Yes" every time she repeated the question. She looked at me with such crushing grief and said, "My son, whom I waited 15 years to have and finally was born is now dead. I disown you till the day of judgment, Ibrahim." I cried but Christ touched my heart and said, "I am your family now! I am your father, brother, mother, sister, friend, and everything to you, Timothy, now." I cannot forget those days when my mother would call the police to arrest me. She even went to a witch to put a curse on me and bring me back to the fold of Islam. The witch said, "Your son is following a path which he will never forsake and he will be victorious all his life as long as he walks in it." These words, from the mouth of a witch, brought my younger brother to know Christ. The testimony of demons about our victorious Lord renders skepticism and unbelief absurd (Please read Romans 8:35-39). You also can be more than a conqueror through Christ, your Victor who loves you! Believe it!

I lost my Bible and all my Christian books were confiscated. All I had was the radio. I went sneakily to get my radio to listen secretly to Voice of Hope, searching for some comfort-songs in the night. (By the way, I speak now publickly over Voice of Hope since I live in a free country, America). Yet my mother caught me and she immediately snatched the radio out of my hand and beat me on the head with her shoes. I was just 20 years old at that time. I prayed for a Bible and the Lord heard me. I went to pick up a Bible package from the post office. The head of the post office, Kamal, slapped me forcefully and punched me in the face. I saw all kinds of terror...I was crying from the intensity of pain. He said to me: "You just go after these Christian infidels, leave Islam and we will wipe you out. We will send you behind the sun!" I felt trapped praying fervently to leave Egypt and practice my faith in Christ. Father of comfort, you never left me. Please remind me of your Son hanging on the cross crying out in the depth of agony: "My God, my God why have you forsaken me?" Lord Jesus, they all forsook you, and yet You found rest in Your Father. I need to depend on the Father as you did".

After 3 years, I decided to move to Cairo which was not any safer. The last time the police had arrested me they said, "According to us, you are an infidel who has committed high treason. Next time we arrest you, it will be capital punishment." To make it worse, the "Christian" landlord told me he could not shelter a fugitive criminal anymore. I was not welcome in my own country anymore. Nevertheless, the Lord intervened, and a Palestinian evangelist, Anis Sharrosh, introduced me to Dr. Paige Patterson. He began to help me apply for a visa to the United States. At first, I was denied the visa, but Dr. Patterson did not give up. Finally, I was granted an entry visa, and I was supernaturally able to leave Egypt. Lord, You never deliver your children out of bondage to bring them back into it...Help me to live somewhere to practice my Christian faith without the police harrassment. Lord, please do whatever it takes so I don't have to live in an environment where people would force me to go into the mosque. You want your children to worship freely even if this means fleeing for their lives like me so that Christ becomes all in all.

If it had not been for Dr. Patterson, I would have been history today. I was scheduled to be executed, and God saw that He had more work for me to do. So, he used Dr. Patterson in supernaturally rescuing my life. God Almighty is a Father of the fatherless (Psalm 68:5), and when my father and mother forsake me, as David declares, the LORD holds me to Himself. Is God the Almighty, Your Heavenly Father, my friend? (Galations 4:6) God the Almighty and Majestic One delights in you personally (Proverbs 8:31).

Lord, may I never be secure or seek easiness in life at the expense of union with You. Didn't you tell us Lord, "And you will be hated by all on account of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he shall be saved" (Mark 13:13)? Please don't let me rush your salvation, Lord, in the midst of trouble, but please give me patience so I can endure hardships as a soldier of the cross of Christ! Lord, may Your love consume me to such an extent that the doing of your will would be the real bread of my life. In Christ's name, Amen!

Three teenage Christian girls were beheaded and a fourth was seriously wounded in a savage attack on Saturday by unidentified assailants in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi.

The girls were among a group of students from a private Christian high school who were ambushed while walking through a cocoa plantation in Poso Kota subdistrict on their way to class, police Major Riky Naldo said.

The area is close to the provincial capital of Poso, about 1000 kilometres northeast of Jakarta.

Naldo said the heads of the three dead victims were found several kilometres from their bodies.

In Jakarta, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered the police to begin a hunt for the killers.

"In the holy month of Ramadan, we are again shocked by a sadistic crime in Poso that claimed the lives of three school students," he told reporters at the airport as he prepared to fly to Sumatra island.

"I condemn this barbarous killing, whoever the perpetrators are and whatever their motives."

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation, but Central Sulawesi has a roughly equal number of Muslims and Christians. The province was the scene of a bloody religious war in 2001-2002 that killed around 1000 people from both communities.

At the time, beheadings, burnings and other atrocities were common.

A government-mediated truce succeeded in ending the conflict in early 2002, but there have since been a series of bomb attacks and assassinations of Christians.

These included a blast at a market in Poso, a predominantly Christian town, that killed 22 people in May.

Christian leaders have repeatedly accused the authorities in Jakarta of not doing enough to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The Christian-Muslim conflict in Sulawesi was an extension of a wider sectarian war in the nearby Maluku archipelago in which up to 9000 perished between 1999 and 2002.

The Maluku conflict intensified soon after it began with the arrival of volunteers belonging to Laskar Jihad, a newly created militia from Indonesia's main island of Java that was supported by hardline elements of the security forces.

Analysts and diplomats accused senior army commanders of funding and training the militia, which was hurriedly disbanded following the terrorist attacks on the tourist island of Bali in 2002 which claimed 202 lives, including 88 Australians.

The Religion Of The Moon God

The Religion of the Moon God

The Babylonian MOON-GOD is located in the British Museum, Babylonian Room, Case B. It is a humanoid form seated on a throne having a crescent moon in front of the moon god's head.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered why the crescent Moon is the symbol of Islam? Why do Muslims put a crescent Moon on top of their mosques and minarets? Why do flags of Islamic nations have the crescent Moon? Why do Muslims put a crescent Moon on their caps?

The Religion of the Moon

The picture of the Babylonian Moon-God found on a cylinder seal in the British Museum is from an archeological discovery from the Middle East, which is now on display at the British Museum. Throughout the Fertile Crescent from Egypt to Turkey, archeologists have dug up hundreds of little idols with a crescent Moon sitting on their head. In ancient pagan temples, there are walls with pictures of a god sitting on a throne with a crescent Moon over his head. At times there are several stars placed near the Moon to symbolize the daughters of the Moon god.

The Connection

By this time, you are beginning to realize that there must be a connection between the ancient pagan religion of the worship of the god and Islam. And you are correct. Before Mohammed (if he ever really existed) was ever born, the Arabs worshipped 360 pagan gods housed in the Kabah in Mecca. One of the pagan gods they worshipped was the Moon god who was married to the Sun goddess. The stars were their children.

The Rituals of the Moon

People worshipped the Moon god by bowing in prayer toward Mecca several times a day. They would make a pilgrimage to Mecca and run around a pagan stone temple called the Kabah seven times; slit the throat of a sheep; and throw stones at the devil. They gave alms to the poor in honor of the Moon god. They fasted during the month, which began with the appearance of the crescent Moon in the sky and closed when the crescent Moon reappeared. They put the symbol of the crescent Moon on the walls of their homes and on their clothing. This Moon religion was the pagan religion in which Mohammed was reared.

"Wait a second", you may be saying to yourself, "the ancient religious rituals of the Moon are what the Muslims are still practicing today! The Muslims bow in prayer toward Mecca. They make a pilgrimage to Mecca and run around the Kabah seven times. They are still slitting the throats of sheep and throwing stones at the devil. They even have the fast of Ramadan, which begins and ends with the crescent Moon. If this is true, then what we today call the "pillars of Islam" is nothing more than the pagan rituals of the Moon god!!"

Archeologists have discovered that the name of the Moon god in Arabia was "Al-ilah" which was later shortened to "Allah." His consort was the Sun goddess and their daughters wer called "the daughters of Allah." The names of the "daughters of Allah" as given in the Qur`an are Lat, Uzza and Manat (Surah 53:19-20). They are the stars next to the symbol of the Moon.

The Mystery Solved

The mystery is now solved. Where did Islam get the crescent Mon symbol which sits on top of its mosques and is displayed on its flags? From the religion of the Moon god. Where did Islam get the name of its god? From the Moon god, Allah. How sad it is to see people ignorantly bowing down toward Mecca and praying toward the Moon god Allah. Muslims are actually worshipping demons according to the Bible (I Cor. 10:20).

The Religion of the Bible

How different is the religion of the Patriarchs, prophets, apostles and Jesus. They did not worship the Moon god Allah or practice any of its rituals. This is why Islam and its god Allah are never mentioned in the Bible. There is but one, true, living, eternal, triune Being who is God by nature and Maker of heaven and earth. The name of this one true God is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:20); not Allah!!
