I think with this we must also look at how the State and Federal laws look at killing, was it pre-meditated? if so i think under god`s Law we would be found completely guilty of this at the dread Judgement..but if clearly an uncontrollable situation arises and you must defend yourself or significant other or neighbor, as with Fr.Arseny God would Protect and give us strength....

Recall that David, Saul and the ancient Israelis were commanded by God to destroy some of their enemies. When Saul failed in keeping the law, those he spared later crucified his sons.

David however, was not allowed to build the temple because of the shedding of much blood, and cried, "save me from bloodguiltiness oh God of my salvation..." in Psalm 50 (51 KJV).

Sometimes we have to commit one sin to oppose a greater sin, and that is the position David found himself in. That should not excuse one from the medicines of the Church - including excommunication for three years. Its always wrong to kill.

Elisha took up the sword and slaughtered idol worshipping priest who had themselves done evil things and slaughtered the prophets. For three years prior, the heavens had been closed.

When Peter cut off the ear of the high priest's servant, it was symbolic of how the transgression of using the sword can cause others not to hear the Word. Jesus healed the man's ear and this shows that all such sins can be healed by Christ Himself.
