Perhaps you should try it before being so critical, if nothing else it'll help take your mind off what others are doing.

You assume more than is stated.....First you do not know me and do not know what I do or do not do.

Second...I would say to you they were taught wrong. And/or they assume that such displays are the proper way to do things. This whole idea of the calestenics spawned a whole discussion one night in our family. Turns out that even long time Orthodox people don't know the "rules".

We went so far as to pull out the "rules" and to discuss them. It would seem that even you need to do so too. At the back of most prayer books, although I can only attest to the Jordanville one, there are is a list of dos and don'ts. Prostrations and waist prostrations are covered. I think once you review the rules you will find that you are not doing it quite right.

Third, I was taught that ostentatious shows of "piety" are not to one's benefit. We are taught not to let the right know what the left is doing (or vice versa). If I am standing in the middle of the church doing calestenics then I am not keeping the left from knowing what the right is doing. Further, I am distracting others, causing them to sin in some way.

Personally I would far rather keep my prayers to myself rather than "show" you that I am doing the "right" thing by emulating your calestenics.

I was going by what you said, while nothing I said gave you any base for your assumptions about my practice. You were critical. You compared it with your superior behaviour as you continue to do below. You are at the very least arrogant in assuming that the tradition you have been taught should be followed by everyone or that you have nothing left to learn, you won't find everything about Orthodox practice in the back of a book, which use shows your ignorance about Orthodoxy and yet you think you can correct centuries of teaching. At worst you are arrogant to dare judge the piety of another in prayer according to a practice you know nothing about and which bears no relation to your idea of piety, as you have yourself described.

You're welcome.

You're still arrogant. It's called discernment, it's a statement of fact from your post lauding yourself and your knowledge and criticising people and a tradition you know nothing about - re-read your posts on this, you're the one making judgements from ignorance.

What do you know of their piety? Do you know their heart? Do you know their prayers? Do you know their pain? Do you know who taught them or why? Do you know anything at all about this tradition?

Do you really think they're putting on a show for you...?

My, my ,my aren't you on a high horse............. I do believe you have interjected your own prejudices on poor Milla. I certainly did not get from her posts what you so prejudiciously seemed to have gleamed.

Ignorant little whipper snapper thinks she can correct Orthodox tradition after looking it up in the back of a book plus judging another's piety from her own supposed and self-proclaimed superior spirituality. What's not obvious about it?

Unless you agree with her of course..

Example below to remind you.

Dear Myrrh:
For someone who refuses to reveal himself, you certainly take much upon yourself. I do not know who you are, which church you call home or even if you are a young or old person. Yet you have taken it upon yourself to be my judge and jury. It would be interesting to learn why you feel you must appoint yourself as my judge.

I have been a member of this forum since October of 2002 and I have always been very open about who and what I am, where I park my hat and the nature of my Orthodoxy. Yet despite all this you feel it necessary to not only attack me and my character, but to also belittle me on this list. Again I would like to know why.

Milla

P.S. The fact that none of the moderators have stepped in is also very telling.......
