Glorification of Metropolitan Philaret

Post by Kybihetz21 »

As many of you know, the Synod of Bishops of the ROCOR/ROCIE under the presidency of Bishop Vladimir is planning the glorification of Metropolitan Philaret of New York and Eastern America. Whether you recognize this or not, I only wanted to know if there is anyone here (this forum) that is planning to attend the festivities associated with this joyful occasion. I still don’t know if I would be able to go, but would be very interested to get in touch with anyone who wishes to do so (go to Mansonville).

Asking for your prayers,

servant of God, reader Miguel

If you find someone, let me know-- if someone with a video camera were to go it'd be great for video for either the Mansonville or Kyiv glorification.

I happened to be browsing and came across the summary with photos released Oct 9 about the ROCiE Glorification. Looks like really a lot of people attended!
Anyone know which nun that is, from Vladimirskaya Convent, or elsewhere?

My big question is that the third photo shows one of two Icons the ROCiE had painted, one from NY and the other from Kiev, they explain.

Kyb., would you happen to be aware of which one that is, and if there might be any better pictures that show the entire Icon closer?
From the picture, it looks well done, perhaps the best so far?
If so, I would like to be able to print it or find some sort of copy!
Thanks for any info on this or any reports about the Glorification performed at Mansonville.
All was from the ROCiE-Vladimir site:

Sadly, I was not able to attend the glorification services, but an acquaintance of mine did, and was able to bring back a copy of the “New York” icon of St. Philaret, along with a prosphora, both of which made me very happy.

The nun from the Vladimir Convent is Mother Isikhia (I believe the female version of Ezekiel), who helps Mother Eugenia (who is well over 90 years old).

If I recall, there were 2 simultaneous glorifications, one in Kiev, which used the “Kiev” version of the icon, and the one in Mansonville, which used both the “Kostroma” and the “New York” versions of it. There is a link (this is the English version http://www.roca-sobor.org/node/380) where all three icons may be downloaded and printed (if you use good quality paper, glossy, etc., they will come out very nicely).

In my opinion (I am very opinionated), the one that represents Vladika Philaret the best is the “New York” icon. Although icons shouldn’t be exact representations of the person/event portrayed (not like a photograph), I really appreciate the fact of “knowing” who is the one represented, and not trying to guess who it is; at the end, it is an “image” of the individual.

Thanks so much for answering right away - SEVERAL of my questions!
I wondered if that could be Mother Isikhia, but haven't seen her picture for long time.
I always had thought that was a Japanese version of an Orthodox name--thanks for clearing that up!

It looks like too from that report, that there was a new tonsure, Sister or Mother Dosithea - was this at this same Convent? Are they attracting any new sisters, do you hear from your contacts in California? Is Fr John Kochergin still the priest there? It's difficult to find information that is sure to be up to date until ROCiE gets maybe a little more organized after this great event.

I so agree about the New Yorkskaya Icon or whatever they call it! The Kostroma one makes him look a little fearful or strange, I had thought. No offense.
The Kievskaya one was - I know what you meant - too stereotypical. Could be any of the galaxy of Prepodobny's, is that word? There is nothing to indicate Metropolitan Philaret's unique, warm, kindly features. Thus for me as well, that type is not so appealing.

You are fortunate indeed to get a copy of the Icon and the prosphora. I personally think that this was a big event and merits more publicity.
I was watching out for news of the glorification, as I was quite interested. After nothing showed up for awhile, I forgot!

I'm going to print that Icon whenever I get the chance. Hope Mansonville is not in any danger of being apprehended by the villians in New York and/or Canada.
Speaking of some of them alive or posthumously, I just found a print of Bishop Laurus of ROCOR when he was the Bishop of Manhattan under Metropolitan Philaret. Probably his first official portrait.
If anyone hasn't seen this, he wouldn't BELIEVE the immense size of his pectoral Cross and Panaghia! They look about half a foot tall each! They take up his entire chest. In conjunction with his almost smirk at the viewer, one could not see those much-lauded qualities in him of humility and meekness. The smug look in the younger Laurus' eyes and surprising "I'm tough" posture suggests that he was - I assert - a career bishop from the very first who had broken into the hallowed ranks of the ROCOR Hierarchy. For what precise goal? This is a matter for much past, present and future speculation, no doubt!

Since I have not seen the picture you mention, I can’t be sure, but I am almost positive you are talking about this cross and panagia set given to Vladika Vitalii (of New Jersey) by the Carpatho – Russian people and that was inherited by Vladika Averkii (maybe not, I don’t recall exactly how Bishop Laurus got it, but I think it was that way) and then given to Bishop Laurus when he was consecrated to the episcopacy in 1967:

http://www.churchofourlady.org/images/bishop_laurus.jpg (official portrait of Metropolitan Laurus wearing the full set)

By the way, Isikhia/Isixia it’s the Russian version, not Japanese. So far I know that Fr. John is the second priest (there is a hieromonk too, who used to serve the parish in Richmond Hill, NY).

That's a great background of the set. The Cross looks like the same one, but I'm rushing to go get that pic out of the trash before it gets taken away, as I want to verify.
The earlier pic looks just outlandish, whereas your second one where he is the more hieratic seasoned Metropolitan, looks normal.
I threw it away because I just didn't want that look on his face, or really much of anything to do with him, around poisoning my property! Let me go grab it if I can get to it!
Archbishop Vitaly is such a different case: I have his photo all over the place, even on the refrigerator, as his long hours of hard work on behalf of the Church Abroad and against the Communists and with all the printing of spiritual literature is immortally inspiring to me.
By the way, Kyb, I made a big search for the videos on Saturday, anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, thinking it would be great to find them on that day. But so far they remain elusive! After all my boasting that I knew where they were, I'm sorry but when I checked awhile ago they weren't in the box. So the search continues, just wanted to let you know while you're on the line here!
