Corner Shelves

Post by Alyosha »

I just wanted to recommend Target - I bought a nice little set of corner shelves there on Saturday (3 shelves starting with a small one and getting bigger). They are white with a decorated trim. They were on the shelves in the part of the store that sells things for home & bathroom. Only $15! I love Target :)

Actually, seeing pictures of icon corners on this thread inspired me to stop procrastinating and set up my own. So, thank you all.

I thought I might mention something our family did which was very useful.

For our Icon corner, which is really on a wall and not in a corner at all, we purchased a nice nightstand which we use as our holy table. The little drawer is useful for incense, charcoal, wicks, small prayer books, annointing oil, candles, and a whole bunch of other things. In the cabinets below, we keep extra charcoal, extra incense, larger candles from Holy Days, dried antidoron from Holy Thursday, olive oil, rose water for cleaning the icons, our phrosphora stamp, and a few other things.

We teach that once something is used for God, it cannot be used for anything else. Therefore, keeping as much as possible of things we dedicate to Christ in one place helps keep things in order and undefiled.

Also, a trick for keeping the Holy Fire from Pascha is to light your pilot light on your hot water heater with it. I know people might object to this, but ours always goes out within the first few weeks so its nice to have.

Anyway, I hope this gave someone an idea.

A suggestion

There's a store here (I believe it's in the U.S. as well) called "Home Sense" which usually has an interesting supply of decorative shelves of varying sizes and styles - and as a bonus, they're very affordable. I recently bought a small shelf to place on our living room wall (I mounted a couple of icons to the wall above the shelf and a Celtic Cross...betraying one side of my familial background), and am very pleased with it...not to mention that the price was right ($15 dollars Canadian, and that's with our ridiculously high sales tax.) :)

Building supply stores are also a gold mine for these type of projects, as are arts & crafts supply stores, particularly if you're inclined to get a little creative and do some of the finishing work yourself...which is part of the reason why I'm eager to get a hand held router sometime soon, and perhaps a dremel tool with some of the neato attachments (I think I need to drop some birthday gift hints with the friends and family) :)
