Russian language class

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Russian language class

Post by Alexander Kuzmin »

Maria asked me: "Hey, Alexander, could you start a Russian class here in a new thread?"

It is my pleasure! First step is to read in Russian. It is easy! Most of Russian words sound as they are written. So you need only to remember the letters and just to read the word letter-by-letter. (English or French are more difficult in this case. Look at the word "daughter" for example -- it has 8 letters but only 4 sounds, including "o" that is absent among letters, Russian is easy in this aspect).

Some Russian letters sound approximately as the same English letters. These are: а, е, к, м (that is m), о, т (that is t).

Other letters look like English, but sound different:
в is “v”( like in is “very”),
и (reversed n) is "i" (like in “is”),
н is “n”,
п is “p”,
р is “r”,
c is “s”,
y is “u” (“oo”),
x is “kh”.

Also
б and capital Б is for “b”,
л is for “L”.

Knowing this, try to read these Russian words. You know them!
Америка, Монтана, Алабама, Бостон, Колорадо, митрополит.

Try to read all Russian signs you meet in your life! It will help you to remember the letters and you will be able to read.

And here is the entire alphabet. Only 33 letters! Print it out and hang it above the dining table (not with icons!) to learn it while you eat! Soon I will give you more familiar Russian words to practice your reading.

Alexander,

Wow, this is quite the undertaking! Thank you for taking the time to put this first post together. I'll have to print this out and give it the ol' college try.

Omsk [as in : RTOC Archbishop Tikon of ___], Kiev, St Petersburg [St Xenia Feast Day tomorrow!], Suzdal
Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan
I can read pretty well place names or Saints' names.
But not other words. Unless I have heard them in conversation and asked
to find out what they meant. One example is "Nasha", which I kept hearing
a Hieromonk say during his sermon at Valaam Podvorie, Moscow.
I never forgot it, either, because the meaning came during Church, one, and
two, it was in real life experience.
Hence I always feel comfortable when hearing the word Nasha ["Our"].
Of course, the rest of the sentence may be ... Russian [not Greek !] to me.
Or, another is what a friend used to begin her sentences with when explaining
the history of an island in the White Sea, "Vot !"
It means "Now !" She had a wonderful schoolteacher manner about her.
Anyway, I am familiar with almost all of the letters, but
learning the vocabulary and the sentence structure and pronunication is
a different story.
It's important to try !

Thank you, this is fun !

The earlier words were :

America, Montana, Alabama, Boston, Colorado, Metropolit

That last one is easy for those like me who love trying to figure out captions under
pictures of Metroplitan Philaret...

I didn't realize that the letters spell out the sound much more precisely than English or French.
I always thought Russian was so difficult !
Isn't it ??

Are the following correct?

  1. митрополит = metropolis

  2. Metropolitan = Митрополитaн

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.
