This week, the president made a highly publicized (and politicized) visit to the Islamic Society of Baltimore - an American mosque with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban.
The mosque, according to Obama, has "an All-American story." The question is: which story is the President telling?
A story of all religions being equal? "Think of your own church or synagogue or temple," he said on Wednesday, "And mosques like this will be very familiar. This is where families come to worship and express their love for God and for each other."
But this particular mosque hasn't been just a place of worship. It's been the petri dish for radical Islamist thought.
For fifteen years, the mosque was served by former imam and member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan, Mohamad Adam El-Sheikh.
During his time at the mosque in Baltimore, he served as regional director for the Islamic American Relief Agency - the international parent organization of which has been cited by the U.S. Treasury Department for connections to Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
After leaving his position in Baltimore, El-Sheikh went on to become a top Al Qaeda affiliate operative in Yemen and was finally killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011.
