As the Sun Turns: Solar Minimums and Maximums

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Look at those snow covered trees. They look like giants .. like people.

This picture was taken in Finland.

Unexpectedly, sunspot 2529 has unleased a big M6.7 today at 5:29 PM PDT (0029 UT).

This was an impulsive sun flare with sudden onset and rapid decline typical of a magnetic crochet.

After a period of no sunspots during June and July of 2016 (16 days total), the silence has been broken with dynamic sunspot 2564 which produced an impulsive C8.6 flare at 00:59 UT today, June 10, 2016.

This in from Belgium in an email sent from http://www.sidc.be/products/meu

COMMENT: NOAA active region 2564 (Catania number 6) did produce two C-class
flares, the strongest being a C8.6 flare peaking at 0:59UT. The flare was
associated with a type II radio burst (observed at Learmonth) and a narrow
CME, travelling away from the Sun-Earth line. No Earth directed CMEs were
observed. More flaring at the C-level is expected from NOAA 2564.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Today, just this evening, we had an M5.0 Class Solar flare at 0211 UT.

It was an impulsive explosion and shot up straight from a B5 to the M5 level in a matter of minutes. Then it quickly subsided. These types of impulsive explosions greatly heat the ionosphere and could trigger a temporary worsening of atmospheric storms on earth. It is also called a magnetic crochet.
