That is not a terrible development, but some of these institutions throughout the UK are having to close up shop for lack of business.
Reasons come from a twitter post which suggests that generational behavior shifts -- and a surprising lack of disposable income among the British public may play a role here. Poverty must have struck the UK ?
However, the point gets missed that most humans prefer to talk in person with other people, as opposed to chatting on the internet. Though i guess that dynamic may have changed during the past decades ?
"Couple of things spring to mind that’s causing this:
Cost: people simply don’t have the spare cash
Sober: Apparently the upcoming generation are the most sober.
Young people simply aren’t drinking as much.
Social Media: You no longer need places like bars, clubs or pubs to socialise. Can do it on the internet, for free.
Immigration: A lot of immigrants are Muslim and do not drink. Many locals are moving out of the country which further drives the issue"
UK : nobody goes to 'pubs' anymore

I guess even ancient Roman watering holes in the province of Britannia have lost all their business ...!
Roman archeological site photographer Pete Savin noted :
"The tavern outside the west gate of the 3rd Century stone fort of Vindolanda is now sadly closed and has been for some time but would have done a steady trade from the 4th cohort of Gauls who were based here. Beyond the ridge in the background lies Hadrian's Wall"
