Not a defense of Porphyrios by any means, but he was involved with the "Schism of Montaner", he visited Italy and along with bishop Albino Luciani, who later became Pope John Paul I, convinced most of the people of the village of Montaner to join the New Calendarists.

Only difference was Albino Luciani convinced the people of Montaner to become New Calendarists because of how unlikeable he was, whereas Porphyrios was apparently rather likeable.

Is there a source on this?

i somehow missed this entire thread, sorry.

That story about Porphyrios and the gold doesn't ring true to me.
If it had been, then everyone would have recounted it and the monastery would have preserved the "miracle story" forever after.

Is there any independent source for this account ?

I thought i recognized Bishop Gerasim, formerly of Platina.
I must have said this awhile ago, but he doesn't look at ALL like the same person. Did anyone else notice this ?

Was it joining the OCA that could have done that ?! What a bad choice, just to be made a bishop perhaps.

It was mentioned in his official biography the EP put out, at least the English version. I may still have a copy of that somewhere around here. I will reply in a few days if I have it.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
