re-ordination?

A friend sent this quote to me earlier today and I thought the readers might find it interesting.

Canon LXVIII of the Apostolic Constitutions.

"If any bishop, presbyter, or deacon, shall receive from anyone a second ordination, let both the ordained and the ordainer be deposed; unless indeed it be proved that he had his ordination from heretics; for those who have been baptized or ordained by such persons cannot be either of the faithful or of the clergy."

(emphasis mine)

the implications of this certainly are interesting......

The implications are simply that the penalty is different for re-ordaining validly ordained heretics.

All this canon is doing is specifying a penalty--not saying that the other actions are necessarily permissible.

but the last line clearly states that those who are baptized or ordained by heretics are neither of the clergy or the faithful. Therefore there is no such thing as a "valid" heretic, unless it was someone who was part of the true Church but apostasised, but those whom that person ordains or baptizes are not part of the clergy or the faithful.

At least that is how I read it.

You are reading that correctly.

If I remember my history correctly. Of the three Greek bishops who returned to the old calender one of them was ordained under the new calender, but had it corrected by laying of hands. OOD can fill in details if he chooses.

It is sad that there are those would would read into the Canons instead of accepting them as they are. At least there are some jurisdictions who will go the step and just deny them rather than read into them, but then I am not sure what is worse...

The good thing is I believe Father Hieromonk Goerge stated recently that Dormition Skete and Holy Apostles Convent will be republidhing the Rudder. Personally I cannot wait to read the canons in their entirety.

Do you find it abnormal that people would seek all the knowledge that they can find regarding their Faith and in doing so make an informed decision? I do not think that how long I have been Orthodox has a thing to do with my question and would ask why you feel that this has any merit to your post. although since you asked I will tell you. I have bee studying Orthodoxy for three (3) years and have been a Cathechumen for a week. I eagerly await your response.
