Should We Rest from Work on the Leavetaking of the Ascension?

Post by aszurkus »

Considering that today is the Leavetaking of the Ascension, if the Leavetaking is, Liturgically, a continuation or culmination of the feast itself (with largely the same commemorations), should it not also be treated in spirit—and in practice—similarly to the feast?

Particularly, should we refrain from work today, just as we did on the Ascension itself? Is this something that we see in the Orthodox tradition and lives of the Saints?

The tradition in the Church has long been that all feasts should be rested from work. Medieval serfs usually took all important and even semi-important feasts off. Only in our secularist productivity-driven age have we prioritized work over Church.

Someone told me that they were once told by a Russian monk, "Work to live, don't live to work."
