ROCOR priests oppose unification with Moscow patriarchate

OPPOSITION DELEGATES TO PASTORAL CONFERENCE OF ROCOR TO SEND OWN DELEGATION TO RUSSIA

Portal-credo.ru, 11 December 2003

Priests who are unhappy with the ROCOR course toward reconciliation with RPTsMP intend to send their own independent delegation to Russia in order to determine whether there has been preserved in Russia any church with grace. This was stated on the second day of the work of the All-Diaspora Pastoral Conference in Nyack [New York].

Opponents of unification with RPTsMP distributed a letter to conference participants which stated that the Russian Orthodox church of the Moscow patriarchate had been created artificially in the soviet years and that ROCOR has remembered this during all the years of its existence. The main task of ROCOR, in the opinion of the letter's authors, is liberation of Russian believers and providing them a genuine canonical hierarchy.

This is typical bad reporting from portal-credo

Hey, this is an example of the portal-credo people making up news!

On the yahoo-jurisdictions forum, someone posted a report from an anonymous source on day one of the conference and, when asked by Fr. Ambrose of New Zealand to reveal the source, he replied, "I am not at liberty to disclose it - when the time is right that person himself may may wish to disclose his identity."

Father Ambrose replied, "I just love anonymous sources. Their anonymity is a guarantee that they are speaking freely and truthfully. I received this an hour ago from an inside source in Nyack:

"The second day of the Pan-Diaspora Clergy Conference witnessed attempts by the anti-Moscow clerical Mafia to wrest control of proceedings; in this they were supported by the bishops attending on this day. A statement has been drafted confirming the traditional teaching of ROCIR that the Moscow Patriarchate is a creation of the Soviet period and is not the Russian Church. A new delegation is being considered, to be sent to Russia to make enquiries as to whether there is in fact any surviving grace-filled Russian Church, and would it consider entering into dialogue with the West and allow the ROCIR to re-invigorate it and provide it with a hierarchy and Mysteries. If this is achieved a major programme is envisioned to liberate the 160,000,000 Christians belonging to the Moscow Church and supply them with non-carcinogenic incense and a genuine hierarchy."

Unless someone proves me wrong, this is what I suspect happened: the portal-credo people, not being the greatest speakers of English, didn't pick up on the fact that this was a joke. They translated it into Russian and later into English. Bewildered by the reference to "non-carcinogenic incense," they left it out.

Portal-credo has no real reporters and vacuums in anything it likes, rewrtiting it to suit its tastes. I have personally sent them several corrections to their pseudo-news stories. To their credit, in a number of cases they have withdrawn their fiction.

If that is true, that is quite funny. You should write Portal-Credo about it. It is also being reported at Stetson University's Russia Religion News

The joyous part is there may be a vain of truth here. Only time will tell how many priests and perhaps even bishops leave the ROCOR as a result of this false attempt at union.

I have written to both Stetson and portal-credo. We'll see what happens!

I am sure, in fact hoping, that all positions are being heard in Nyack. Having said that, do you counsel people to leave because of an attempt, even if unrealized, at union?

Thank God not everybody there is asleep and living in bizzaro world. It is about time the clergy stands up for the truth and attempts to save the church from total destruction.
