Reading During Lent

Post by Justin Kissel »

Are there any books that you try to read every Lent which you find to be "motivating"? I hate to use that word, but to be honest some books just motivate or energize me more than others regarding how eagerly I fast, pray, etc.

I'd like to read The Ladder of Divine Ascent each year, but we haven't gotten that book yet. :( For the time being, I suppose the only book we read (and will continue to read) on a yearly basis is the Synaxarion.

Prayers by the Lake by Bishop Nikolai Velimirovic.

I would suggest that to anyone. Each prayer is brief but meaningful and a pleasure to read. Two short paragraphs can affect you for a very long time and you will find that you will have memorized passages without intention. Its spiritual value is immense. I wouldn't stress finishing the book. I'm not sure it's something you can "finish," in that you find yourself praying the prayers you read.

My goal is to be able to read it in Serbian in the next few years. If it's this good in English . . .
