Layperson's Blessing

Post by Waldemar »

How are lay Orthodox Christians supposed to bless with the Sign of the Cross? In prayer books, I have read that we are encouraged to bless our bed/pillow before sleep with the Sign of the Cross or with our neck cross. Parents are to bless their children with the Sign of the Cross.

Do we bless like the clergy: up, down, left, right towards the one blessed or we make the Sign of the Cross like we are blessing ourselves: up, down, right, left?

Hand position?

Lay Blessings

Lay blessings are allowed, as we can bless down. A father, for instance should bless his children before bed. He blesses in the direction like a priest but with the position that one crosses one's self with the thumb, pointy and middle fingers together and the ring and pinky fingers together in the palm.
