Romanov Returns Icon

ST. PETERSBURG (AP) -- A descendant of the tsars on Monday returned a famed Russian Orthodox icon that was taken abroad following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

The silver-framed depiction of Christ, called the Savior Icon, was presented to St. Petersburg's Novodevichy Convent by Grand Duke Dmitry Romanovich, a relative of Tsar Nicholas II. The icon had belonged to the Romanov family for generations.

"This is not a gift, the icon has returned to its motherland," Dmitry Romanovich said at a ceremony at the convent in the city. "It has been protecting our family for 85 years in exile."
