clarification on using one's name

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

clarification on using one's name

Post by 1937 Miraculous Cross »

Dear Moderators,

I thought the final outcome of the prior debate was that people posting
would have to include their name. (While some who have responded to my posts, address me as "1937", always sign off with my full name and even city.)

I personally find it very disconcerting that people who claim to be Orthodox, hide behind pseudonyms. It is my belief that if people used their full names, they would then be more polite to each other as well.

So, I am appreciating a clarification on the rules.
thank you.

in Christ,

And I would like to reiterate that there are serious privacy concerns on the internet and I don't think people should be forced to use their real names. Also, given the "turn people in who post online" mentality that pervades some places in both New Calendarist and Old Calendarist Orthodox circles, forcing people to use their full names or real names or whatever will certainly cut off a portion of the population who is afraid to speak out.

I for one am 100% against mandatory real names, and will consider quitting this forum if that policy is enforced.

Anastasios (who doesn't use a psuedonym but respects those who do)

Arguably women should not provide their names or addresses. Men should provide their names, and be open to contact. This is in accordance with St. Paul's teaching in Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition in the covering of women's heads.

I really fail to see how the two are linked. St Paul is talking about a liturgical assembly, not an online forum. By extending what you have stated above, women shouldn't be on forums at all, since they could ask their husbands or fathers what to believe.

You beat me to it, Anastasios. I don't follow the linkage at all. Going along with your wondering, what if a woman is single and her father is dead? Are we somehow to become as the Saudis where women may not go out in public unless they are accompanied by some kind of male relative? :ohvey:

Also, males get stalked and harassed too. Why should they be required to "available" to everyone who reads a publically readable forum?

Arguably only children under the age of 14 should be allowed to post because "a little child shall lead them".
