Prayer with the non-Orthodox?

Post by Pensees »

I am likely to be hired at a second-hand store owned by an Evangelical Christian ministry to the homeless, Union Gospel Mission. Part of company policy is that every morning begins with a group prayer, regardless of differences in Christian denomination. I do not believe that this is something I should abstain from as an Orthodox Christian, though I could be mistaken. Whoever isn't against us, after all, is with us.

Peace.

What about when in Rome, do as the Romans do? I don't see how prayer with other Christians, even those misguided in theology, is harmful.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, is not an Orthodox teaching.

Here are some Orthodox teachings on what the Church instructs you to do, from the Apostolic Canons:

Canon XLV.

Let a bishop, presbyter, or deacon, who has only prayed with heretics, be excommunicated: but if he has permitted them to perform any clerical office, let him be deposed.

Canon XLVI.

We ordain that a bishop, or presbyter, who has admitted the baptism or sacrifice of heretics, be deposed. For what concord hath Christ with Belial, or what part hath a believer with an infidel?
Canon LXIV.

If any clergyman or layman shall enter into a synagogue of Jews or heretics to pray, let the former be deposed and let the latter be excommunicated

Evengalical Protestants are misguided in certain aspects, but they are not heretics. Whoever isn't against us is for us.

Peace.

If you do not think that Evangelical Protestants and their beliefs are heretical then:
a.) You are not fully aware of their doctrine.
b.) You do not yet understand the Orthodox Faith.
c.) Both of the above.

I suggest that you carefully look into the teachings of both.

The true teachings of Orthodoxy would not harden our hearts to fellow Christians.

We see examples of joint prayer by our Hierarchs and throughout our Church. As far as canons, they are there for our Bishops to apply for they discern the meaning behind the canon, circumstances for which it was written, etc. They are not some rule book.
