Johns Hopkins Hospital - Statue - non-Orthodox

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Johns Hopkins Hospital - Statue - non-Orthodox

Post by AndyHolland »

Have not read this book, but it is an interesting commentary on how far we have fallen:

At Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore MD when I was a child, there was a statue of Jesus and it made a big impression on a little child. Apparently, there are many stories associated with patients who entered the hospital - and the first thing you saw was this statue.

The interesting thing is, when the statue (concrete) was set, Jesus had his hands and head raised to heaven. That evening, there was a dense fog. In the morning, the head and hands were pointed down towards the door. They decided to leave the statue that way.

When I saw the statue again as an adult, it was small - just life sized. When I saw it as a child, I could have sworn it was 20 feet tall!

I lelieve you are mistaken..

This statue stands under the dome at the hospital. It is over ten feet tall, and it is carved of Carrera marble. It is a copy of this statue which stands at the cathedral in Copenhagen. The Hopkins statue arrived in 1896; the original was carved in 1820. One can readily see that the posture of the statue hadn't changed in 76 years.

Here is a feature story about the statue from the hospital newsletter.

Thank you CGW, you are correct.

My year memory is getting rather foggy. There is another statue, I believe in Baltimore, that settled due to dense fog and was facing downward in the morning when it had set. I do recall seeing an old picture of it.

Anyway, the statue is impressive and unfortunately, no longer the main entry into the Hospital.
